ICEE Exam Instructions: Eye and Ear, Rectum and Prostate, Cardiac, Female Breast, Slides of Human Biology

Instructions for students participating in the icee exam at utmb-som. The exam includes stations for examining mannequins or standardized patients in various systems: eye and ear, rectum and prostate, cardiac, and female breast. Students are required to perform examinations using provided equipment, identify pathologic findings, and respond to questions about their findings and most likely diagnoses. Examinations must be completed within given time limits.

EYE AND EAR EXAM
For this station, you will perform the following tasks:
EXAMINE THE TWO MANNEQUINS
1. Perform a fundoscopic examination of both eyes on the mannequin you will find in
this room, using the ophthalmoscope located on the wall
RIGHT EYE: This eye is NORMAL. Use it for comparison to the left eye.
LEFT EYE: After examining this eye, you will be asked to identify the pathologic
findings and most likely diagnosis.
2. Perform an external auditory canal and tympanic membrane examination of both ears
on the other mannequin you will find in this room, using the otoscope located on the
wall.
RIGHT EAR: This ear is NORMAL. Use it for comparison to the left ear.
LEFT EAR: After examining this ear, you will be asked to identify the pathologic
findings and most likely diagnosis.
You may not manipulate or reposition the mannequins from their original positions. You
may move between mannequins and computer as needed.
RESPOND TO QUESTIONS
After examining the mannequins, you must move to the computer inside the room, log in
using your student P number, and respond to the following questions:

EYE AND EAR EXAM

For this station, you will perform the following tasks:

RECTUM/PROSTATE EXAM

For this station, you will perform the following tasks:

EXAMINE THE MANNEQUIN

Perform a rectum and prostate examination on the mannequin you will find in this room.

After examining this mannequin, you will be asked to identify the pathologic findings and most likely diagnosis.

You may not manipulate or reposition the mannequin from its original position. You may move between mannequin and computer as needed.

RESPOND TO QUESTIONS

After examining the mannequin, you must move to the computer inside the room, log in using your student P number, and respond to the following questions:

Question 1 Select the most accurate description of your prostate gland size

Question 2 Select the most accurate description of your prostate gland texture

Question 3 Select the most accurate description of your most likely prostate diagnosis

FEMALE BREAST EXAM

For this station, you will perform the following tasks:

EXAMINE THE STANDARDIZED PATIENT

Perform a screening breast exam (bilaterally) on the patient in this room. The patient is gowned appropriately, and the video monitoring that is being conducted satisfies the need of a chaperone for this examination.

You should introduce yourself, inform the patient of your planned examination, obtain her verbal permission, and proceed. You do not need to conduct a medical interview. After completing the exam, you should briefly discuss your findings with the patient before leaving the room.

You will be rated on your technique, patient draping, communication, and interpersonal skills during this examination. You will not record your findings or write an examination note as part of this task.
