WARNING: ADHERE CLOSELY TO WORD COUNTS. Project MUST include the following
components, in this order (follow the page numbers). Follow this structure exactly.
1. Cover page: (page 1)
Subject area of the extended essay
Research question
Name
2. Proposal of the research project: (page 2)
200-250 words
Explanation of what you want to research, why this matters, what your initial
thoughts are, and what conclusions you plan to draw.
Thesis statement that outlines your primary argument and research focus.
You are not expected to have a final / perfect research question! We will work
together to develop that down the road. Here, simply propose what you’d like to
research and make your first attempt at a research question.
3. Annotated Bibliography (pages 3, 4 and 5)
Minimum of 600 words
Find at least three sources that provide reliable information on your research
topic. You must do a short summary followed by an analysis for each source. For
each topic you should include what the source offers, why it is relevant, and your
personal thoughts on how it supports your research goals.
There should be a proper MLA citation for every source used.
You may use ANY source that you think is helpful for this project, including
internet sources. However, please avoid Wikipedia.
4. Background research (pages 6, 7 and 8)
Minimum of 600 words
Summary of key points that are essential to understand about your research
topic. Should be written in an educational / explanatory tone that will provide
detailed background information on the subject of your choice.

Grading Criteria

Research proposal project will be scored based on the following criteria: Inclusion of all five listed components 20 points Proper use of MLA format and appropriateness of resources used (No Wikipedia) 20 points Alignment to word count and adherence to instructions / page count 20 points Development of ideas and focus on the research topic 20 points Inclusion of developed thesis statement 20 points Total: 100 points This will be a first quarter grade! You will not be given class time to work on this project.

Note:

Every section should start on its own page for the sake of organization. All work should be typed and printed. Please take advantage of REMIND to ask questions over the summer! If you have ANY questions about topic ideas or sources, don’t hesitate to ask!

Sample Extended Essay Questions:

Do not choose one of these topics! You have free range in choosing the topic you want to work with. If one of these interests you, use it as a starting point and develop it from there. You may choose ANY topic you are interested in.  How is the subject of death treated in selected poems by Emily Bronte and Emily Dickinson?  What is the literary function of the dialogue between language and nature in David Malouf’s An Imaginary Life?  How far does the use of rhetoric in Barack Obama’s speeches increase their effectiveness?  Will the recent policy of cutting bakery prices lead to increased revenue for the Safeway supermarket in Ryde, Sydney?  Has the Kenyan central bank’s policy of interest rate cuts led to a rise in new car sales in Nairobi?  To what extent were Hitler’s educational aims fulfilled in the Uhland Gymnasium, 1937-1939?  How and why have explanations of the Cuban Missile Crisis changed since 1962?  How could the UN intervention in the Rwandan genocide be justified?  To what extent can the limited political rights of women in Saudi Arabia be justified?  Is it politically possible for the US government to win the war on drugs?  Are commercially available antibacterial cleaning agents effective in controlling the growth of E. coli on nutrient agar under laboratory conditions?  Can a program of training at high altitude have an impact on the fitness of an athlete?  From major inputs and outputs of the school canteen, what overall estimate of its environmental impact can be made in terms of an ecological footprint?  How many square numbers are also triangular numbers, where are they, and what other problems lead to Pell’s equation?  Does the addition of e-learning systems improve the performance of students in mathematics?
