Ovid Metamorphoses 11–15 Study Questions
1. Julius Caesar was, of course, a real person who had been assassinated a generation before
Ovid was born. He was also the adoptive father of Augustus. Why would Ovid choose to
conclude his work with Caesar’s apotheosis? How might Augustus feel about this?
2. Note especially Met. 15.851–854. This sentiment could be taken as praise of Augustus or
harsh criticism. How so?
3. Ovid’s bold epilogue has so far proven true. Let’s get philosophical for a few moments: do
you believe poetic immortality is worth the work involved? Do you believe in any kind of
immortality? How does that affect the way you conduct your life?
