Topic I. Compare and contrast different approaches and methods that humans use for controlling the growth and survival of microorganisms. A thorough response will provide indications of how growth and survival are quantified.
Topic II. In the book Arrowsmith, (^) Sinclair Lewis describes the attempts of Dr. Arrowsmith and others to control bacterial infections in humans. Interestingly, one type of control agent he utilized acted in some ways as an arrow directed against the infections. What were the pathogens? What was that "arrow"? What effect did it have upon the pathogens? Choose one type of "arrow", lytic or lysogenic, and make a recommendation to the reader why that type, and not the other type, would be most appropriate for controlling infection. A thorough answer will include some appropriate reference to the Lewis book and (^) also refer to a current research front in infectious disease control that is closely related to this subject in the book.
