You will need to submit this Word file ( Exam2.docx ) and the SPSS output file
( Exam2.spv ) to receive all available points.
BOTH FILES must be submitted on Canvas.
There are two data files used in this exam. You do NOT need to attach the data files (.sav) to your submission.
NO DATA FILE REQUIRED FOR QUESTIONS 1 - 3
- For each of the following scenarios, determine what statistical test should be run to properly evaluate the research question. a. Twenty patients with chronic arthritis pain were given a new treatment to alleviate their pain. The same patients were tested before treatment, 6 months post- treatment, and 12 months post-treatment. Patients indicated level of pain from 0 (no pain) to 9 (severe pain) during testing. What statistical test would be used to examine whether the new treatment was effective at reducing arthritis pain over time? (5 pts) i. What is the statistical test that should be run to evaluate effectiveness of this new course? ii. What is the dependent variable? iii. What is the independent variable(s)? iv. What are the levels of the independent variable?
c. Highschool students were administered a new sleep and nutritional protocol to see whether it could improve students’ exam scores on the SAT. Students either slept for 6 hours, 8 hours, or 10 hours and ate a healthy breakfast (fruit salad) or a less healthy breakfast (pancakes and bacon). (5 pts) i. What is the statistical test that should be run to evaluate effectiveness of this new course? ii. What is the dependent variable? iii. What is the independent variable(s)? iv. What are the levels of the independent variable(s)? v. EXTRA CREDIT: What is one possible confounding variable in this scenario? (+1)
Use bloodpressure-E2.sav for the following two problems.
- Researchers want to know if sodium intake directly predicts blood pressure. They collected information on blood pressure, sodium intake (in mg), and age of subjects to evaluate this. (12 points) a. What statistical test should the researchers run? b. Run the appropriate test in SPSS. c. In general terms (does not need to be APA format) what does the SPSS output tell us about how sodium does/does not predict blood pressure? d. With your results, calculate what blood pressure we would expect to see if someone had a sodium intake of 150. Be sure to include both the starting equation (with values plugged in) and the final answer.
- Now, the researcher is interested in the effects of (1) sex and (2) workout type on participants’ health (HJHS score). a. What is/are the dependent variable(s) in this study? What is/are the independent variable(s)? What are the levels of the independent variable(s)? ( 4 pts ) b. Perform a statistical test (Two-way ANOVA) to examine whether participant sex and workout type influence health. ( 3 pts ) c. Report your results in APA format. For this procedure, there are three important results to consider. What are they? State whether each is significant or not, and how you know. ( 6 pts ) d. In everyday language, explain what the interaction effect , or lack thereof, tells you about the effects of sex and workout type on participants’ HJHS scores. ( 2 pts )
Extra Credit Create a scatterplot displaying the relationship between participant weight and scores on HJHS (from Question 4). (1 bonus point)
