TERM 1
Acetaminophen
DEFINITION 1
A very safe and effective pain reliever and fever reducer
when used as directed under normal circumstances.
Available in several hundred preparations (prescription and
non-prescription). Tylenol is the most common
TERM 2
Aconite
DEFINITION 2
Dried root stocks of the Acontium plant. The plant species
containing this in the US is commonly known as Monkshood.
Causes neurological and cardiac toxicity. Poisoining is rare in
the US, but it is more common in other countries, such as
Hong Kong.
TERM 3
Arsenic
DEFINITION 3
Combines with many enzymes in the body, and thereby
inhibits their normal function. The result is a decrease in the
production of ATP by mitochondria. Arsenic is a chemical
element; can be found anywhere. *Look at acute and chronic
symptoms of poisoning on p.50
TERM 4
Atropine
DEFINITION 4
One of the four alkaloids found in belladonna. They work by
blocking the function of the parasympathetic nervous system
by preventing the action of acetylcholine at its receptor sites.
Atropine also stimulates the CNS.
TERM 5
Belladonna
DEFINITION 5
Contains the alkaloids: atropine, scopolamine, hyoscyamine,
and hyoscine. Poisoning symptoms include: dilated pupils,
blurred vision, increased heart rate, dry mouth,
hallucinations, aggressive behavior, etc.

Belladonna

DEFINITION 5 Contains the alkaloids: atropine, scopolamine, hyoscyamine, and hyoscine. Poisoning symptoms include: dilated pupils, blurred vision, increased heart rate, dry mouth, hallucinations, aggressive behavior, etc.

Carbon dioxide

C02. Having no oxgen in the air and just carbon dioxide can kill you. TERM 7

Carbon monoxide

DEFINITION 7 CO. A colorless, odorless, tasteless, toxic gas that is produced when fuel is burned. Wood, oil, charcoal, gasoline, natural gas, propane, kerosene, and coal all produce carbon monoxide when burned. Blocks the ability of blood to carry oxygen and can cause severe lung and brain damage, even death. The leading cause of deaths from poisoning by a single agent in the U.S. Carbon monoxide is commonly misdiagnosed as other sicknesses. TERM 8

Colchicine

DEFINITION 8 Used today to treat gout and to study cell division. It produces multi organ failure, particularly cardiac failure. A compound extracted from plants in the lily family. TERM 9

Cyanogenic Glycosides

DEFINITION 9 Chemical compounds usually found in certain plants, that release cyanide when they are digested. Examples include the pits from fruits such as apricots, plums, bitter almonds, cherries, apples, and peaches. TERM 10

Denatured Alcohol

DEFINITION 10 Ethyl alcohol with an added poison, making it unfit to drink, and therefore not taxable by the government. It is used in painting, cleaning, chemical manufacturing, and so forth.

Alcohol as an antidote

Since both methyl alcohol and ethylene glycol are metabolized to very toxic products, keeping them from being metabolized will prevent toxicity while they are removed from the body by hemiodialysis (artificial kidney). Therefore, ethyl alcohol is administered to victims or ethylene glycol or methyl alcohol poisoning to prevent the poisons from being metabolized. TERM 17

Duration of Action

DEFINITION 17 How long the drug acts TERM 18

Cocaine in Semen &

Saliva

DEFINITION 18 Cocaine is excreted in both TERM 19

Anxiolytic

DEFINITION 19 Drugs for anxiety (tranquilizer)
