Section 1
1. What kind of changes were seen in the way Wales was governed between 1979
and 1997? Was it these changes that were mainly responsible for the shift in support
towards devolution?
2. Why was a referendum on devolution for Wales held in 2011?
3. Assess which of the parties has found it the most challenging to adapt to the new
political context following the establishment of devolution in Wales.
4. 'To establish devolution arrangements that will meet the needs of the next
generation.' Is this statement a fair description of the arrangements in Section 4 of
the Government of Wales Act 2006 that was implemented following the ‘yes’ vote in
the 2011 referendum?

5. In what way has the nature of the relationship between the Commission, the
Council and the European Parliament changed over the years and what are the
implications of these changes?
6. In what ways has the process of enlargement affected the European Union?
7. Explain the main characteristics and significance of the Lisbon Treaty.
8. Outline some of the main characteristics of the EU’s international policy and
consider what this policy tells us about the nature of the Union’s influence on the
international stage?
