Essential Elements of an Article Review
An article review could be seen as a combination between a summary and your own
critical evaluation of a text.
When reviewing the journal article, you must include the following points:
An
Introduction
of the article
(author, article
and journal title,
publication year, etc.)
A designation of the
main ideas
or points of the article that you
will be presenting.
A summary of the main concepts,
arguments and ideas of the article.
A critical discussion of the main concepts,
arguments and ideas of the article and the author’s approach.
Are there any gaps or weaknesses in his/her discussion or approach?
Is his/her approach too narrow or too broad?
An overall evaluation of the article and its main value or importance.
You can first prepare a longer draft of your review which you can gradually narrow in terms of what best
reflects the overall ideas of the author and your own criticism and evaluation.
It is important to clarify which ideas or arguments are taken from the article you are reviewing and which
ideas are yours. As always proper citations are needed.
