DEFINITION 3 This is what approximately millions of families in Australia have gone through on a daily basis. The topic on domestic violence has been discussed numerous times by the Government and courts, but are our laws actually effective? Reports have revealed that abuse contributes to death, disability, and illnesses in women ages 15-44 than any other preventable risk factor. DEFINITION 4 Is this the type of life we want our people to live in? For our women and children to live in fear and distress? We as human beings NEED to help these victims, our people, by enforcing stricter laws and punishments against the abusers.According to ahiw.gov.au, in 201415, on average, almost 8 women and 2 men were hospitalised each day after being assaulted by their spouse or partner. TERM 5

DEFINITION 5 Although abuse can be against anyone of any gender, nearly 92% of the cases have male abusers with female victims and at least one women is killed a week by their partner or former partnerthats 52 innocent women killed every year! Abuse can lead to many health issues. In addition to injuries from assault, many victims may suffer from chronic pain, gastrointestinal disorder, psychosomatic symptoms and eating problems. It could also lead to mental disorders such as anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression.

Women who are constantly abused, suffer an increased risk of unplanned or early pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases. No human being should ever have to experience any of these health conditions. Studies conducted by Our Watch have shown that one in three Australian women (over the age of 15) have experienced a form of abusethat means your mother, your sister, your aunty or any other female relative could be a victim. TERM 7

DEFINITION 7 I ask you, my peers, to imagine how you would feel if your loved one was a victim of abuse. Think of all the pain and torture they must have gone through. It hurts to think about, right? Now imagine how all those families who are suffering from the loss of their loved one due to battling domestic violence must be feeling right now. Put yourself in their shoes. By implementing stricter laws, we can help decrease the death rates and health issues TERM 8

DEFINITION 8 Without enforcing stricter laws that stops domestic violence, the future generation will begin to think abuse is appropriate once exposed, which can lead to danger within the future society. According to facs.nsw.gov.au, those women who experience violence, more than 50% have children in their care. If a child is exposed to heinous acts of violence and depravity at such a young age, it can drastically change them as they go through the stages of life. TERM 9

DEFINITION 9 As a baby they may start to difficulty developing attachments with their caregivers, as a toddler, they may start to suffer from eating and sleep disturbances, as a child, they may start to struggle with academic performances, emotional stability, and forming relationships with their peers, as a teenager, they are at a higher risk of going through substance abuse or get influenced by the abuser and act violent in their own relationships. TERM 10

DEFINITION 10 What I ask of you selfless and morally minded individuals, is to see how much of an impact domestic violence has on our passive children. How much damage and misery these children go through. Now, I once ask again, is this what we want for our children? Our future generation? Children and young people NEED to grow up in a safe, secure, and nurturing environment. The power of domestic and family violence towards children is immense and can most likely affect them for the rest of their lives so we NEED to change our laws against the issue!
