What kind of a career future is

there in power?

  • Today and in the future
    • Energy Crisis
      • Fossil fuels dirty, dwindling and somewhere else
      • Solar, wind, nuclear all generate electricity that must be transmitted, distributed, stored and converted into motion, heat, etc.
    • US lags the developed world in useful technologies!!
    • There's a “bubble” in the power engineering work force

What kind of a career future is there

in power?

  • Computers are fun, useful and profitable,

but they don't move or heat anything.

  • Ultimately, Life is made more comfortable

not by Microsoft Office, but by food,

transportation, environmental control.

  • We get lots of requests for students

prepared for power and control related

engineering.

Laboratory Practice

  • This Laboratory Is Dangerous!
    • You've been working with 5 Volts,
    • Now you'll work with 208 Volts
    • V>50 Volts can be lethal.
      • If you endanger equipment or life by ignoring instructions, you may fail the course on the spot.
    • Our equipment is heavy, and has sharp edges.
      • No open toe shoes will be allowed in lab. If you show up in flip flops, you fail the lab. Period.
