All athletic staff members must be certified in basic First Aid/CPR/AED. Those working
in aquatic settings must be further certified in Lifeguarding. There must be at least one
person certified in Lifeguarding on deck whenever the pool is in use.
Phone Location and Operation
A campus phone is located in the office in the pool. You must dial 9 to reach off campus
contacts on this phone. A payphone is located directly to the right outside the doors of the
pool in the lobby. You do not need to dial 9 to reach off campus contacts.

IN CASE OF LIFE THREATENING EMERGENCY:
Head Coach (HC) will provide first aid to victim(s)
oIf necessary, HC will perform water rescue as the primary rescuer with
assistance from GA as secondary rescuer
oGA will assume next role once victim is safely out of the water and HC has
the ability to assign role of secondary rescuer/caretaker to anyone available
with proper certifications in the absence of GA, until GA returns
Grad. Asst. (GA) will call 911 on the office phone (do not need to dial 9 to get out)
oHC will tell GA what has happened to person(s) to report to EMS
Name of victim, age, sex, what happened, condition, pertinent medical
information (on file in office), care provided
oGA will give specific location (Donald Miller Pool) and office telephone
number (717) 477-1457
From King St., turn onto N Prince St, then right onto Adams Dr. Make
first left onto Dauphin Dr. Continue until Dauphin ends, then turn right
onto Lancaster Dr. make a slight right onto Bucks Dr. and Heiges
Field House will be on your left
GA will contact Sports Med. Dir. (SMD) and inform him of situation, request help
oSMD will bring any necessary equipment and relieve HC as primary
rescuer/caretaker; HC becomes secondary rescuer/caretaker
GA will contact Athletic Director (AD) to inform him of the situation
oAD will contact the emergency contact of injured person(s)

o AD will report to the incident and serve as crowd control, if necessary o If not, AD will act as help in first aid efforts  GA will contact Facility Manager (FM) to alert him that EMS will be arriving soon o FM will wait at entrance to Heiges Field House for EMS to arrive to direct them to the location of the accident o FM will have keys to gain access to location of incident  EMS arrives and will assess situation o If victim(s) taken to hospital in ambulance, AD will accompany them o AD will inform entire Sports Med. team where the ambulance is taking them Non-Life Threatening Injury  HC will assess situation, provide proper first aid if appropriate o If higher level of training needed, HC will instruct GA to take injured person(s) to SMD o If injured victim is not able to walk to SMD, HC will stay with victim while GA calls SMD requesting he come to the scene  SMD will assess injury, determine appropriate care to provide o If victim is referred to hospital:  SMD will contact AD  AD will call emergency contact of victim, inform them of the situation  AD will drive victim to hospital referred by SMD  SMD will inform HC of victim’s referral Location of Emergency Equipment  Spineboard for water rescue should always be easily accessible on pool deck next to lifeguard stand  First Aid kit will be at the base of the lifeguard stand next to spineboard o Contents include gloves, bandages, antiseptic wipes, tape, scissors, etc  Guard buoy will be in guard-on-duty’s hands AT ALL TIMES  Guard should always have personal breathing mask separate from First Aid kit  Additional safety equipment is located in SMD office; brought to incident by SMD Weather Policy  In event of thunderstorm, pool is grounded; safe to stay in pool  In event of tornado, evacuate pool and get everyone to the basement of Heiges as quickly as possible o Enter women’s locker room through door on deck (if men are present, give warning) and go down through the women’s locker room and out into the basement, next to the Athlete’s Gym Ambulance Access If ambulance transportation is necessary, it can gain access to the front doors of Heiges Field House by driving up the curb at the corner of Lancaster and Bucks Dr. and continuing on the sidewalk to the main entrance.
