FAMILY ACTION’S EDUCATIONAL GRANTS PROGRAMME: ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
1. Who can apply?
Applicants must meet all the following criteria:
Place of study: Be studying at an organisation affiliated to Family Action’s Educational
Grants Service.
Note: If you are an individual looking for funding contact student
services at your college to find out if your college is affiliated to Family
Action. For further information on organisation eligible to affiliate see
“How to apply” below.
Level of study: Be studying on a further education course, including pre-access and
access.
Level of income: Be living on a low income (primarily in receipt of benefits), includes
low waged
Residency status: Have right of residency in the UK or be an asylum seeker (overseas
students are ineligible for grants from Family Action).
Age range: Be 14 years of age or over.
Subject: There are currently no restrictions on the subject of study but
preference will be given to those studying a “commercial
subject” (e.g. IT, bookkeeping, accounting, etc.).
2. What items can be funded?
The “additional” costs associated with a course of study such as clothing and/or equipment
required for the course, travel, examination costs, computers/laptops.
3. What items cannot be funded?
We will not fund course fees, costs already incurred, items provided by the college for the
course, childcare, study outside the UK, higher education courses, postgraduate study or
personal expenditure not directly associated with study such as food, clothing, household
bills.
Note: If you or your student is looking to fund personal needs not associated with
education please visit Family Action’s website and review the eligibility criteria for “welfare
grants” to see if we can assist. We cannot accept applications for personal needs via the
educational grants programme. Visit our website for details of how to apply for welfare
needs.
4. How much can I apply for?
The average grant is likely to be in the region of £200 to a maximum of £300. If the
applicant requires more than the maximum amount available from Family Action you will
be asked to explain how the balance will be raised.
5. How many grants can I apply for?
We are only able to consider one application per applicant in any 12 month period.

  1. How to apply? Applications must be submitted, on-line, by authorised members of college staff (usually student welfare advisors or equivalent) from affiliated organisations.

Affiliation is not available for individuals. To qualify for affiliation organisation must be:

  • Be publicly funded institutions offering further education course (including pre- access and access courses)
  • Have email addresses that include the domain name “ac.uk”
  • Be able to process grants payments (made by BACS to the affiliated organisation) from Family Action on behalf of their students
  • Have student/welfare advisers able to apply for grants on behalf of their students
  • Be able to assist Family Action in evaluating educational grants
