Date: September 29, 2011 (Afternoon) ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY (IUT) ORGANISATION ISLAMIC COOPERATION (OIC) DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING Semester Final Examination Winter Semester, A.Y. 2010-2011 Course No.: EEE 6407 Time: 3 Hours Course Title: Digital Communication Full Marks: 150 There are 8 (eight) questions. Answer any 6 (six) questions. All questions carry equal marks. Marks in the margin indicate full marks. Symbols have their usual meanings, Programmable calculators are not allowed. Do not write on this question paper. 1. (a) Define CTCV, DTCV and DTDV signals. Show that the sampling rate, / needs to be at 15 least twice the bandwidth of the information signal in order to avoid aliasing. (b) Define slope overloading and granular noise in delta modulation. Describe sigma-delta 10 modulation. : 2. (a) Show how cumulative error is prevented by applying feedback for Differential Pulse Code 13 Modulation (DPCM). (b) Describe Transport Format Combination (TFC) procedure using example of AMR voice. 12 3. (a) Distinguish among location areas, routing areas, and UTRAN registration areas. 8 (b) Explain with example how a user may switch among idle, CELL_FACH, CELL_DCH and 17 CELL_PCH states based on his usage characteristics. Write down the procedures used for mobility, addressing and types of calls in case of idle, CELL_FACH, CELL_DCH, CELL_PCH and URA_PCH states. 4, (a) Describe how slot synchronization, frame synchronization, code group identification and 15 primary scrambling code identification are performed in step 1/2/3 search procedure. (b) Describe the purpose of the IMSI, TMSI, P-TMSI and C-RNTI. 10 5. (a) Describe the functions of thee RLC three modes: ‘Transparent Mode (TM), 20 Unacknowledged Mode (UM) and Acknowledged Mode (AM). (b) Distinguish between System Frame Number (SFN) and Connection Frame Number (CFN). wm 6. (a) Describe the random access procedure including transmission of random access preamble 15 and indication on AICH. What does the UE do when it does not hear from NodeB after initial transmission of random access preamble? (b) What is the purpose of system information messages? Which physical channel does carry 10 SIB types?
