SECTION A

Q1. Describe the different mechanisms by which drugs produce their effects, illustrating your answer with specific drug examples. Q2. Describe, with the aid of diagrams, how drugs are absorbed and distributed throughout the body after an oral dose, giving specific drug examples. Q3. Describe the metabolic events that occur during phase I and phase II reactions of drug metabolism. Use specific drug examples to illustrate your answer. Q4. Define the terms tolerance and dependence (10%). Using specific drug examples, describe the characteristics of each (90%). SECTION B Q5. Discuss the properties of antigens and how this influences their immunogenicity. Include in your answer a description of the importance of the methods of antigen administration and immunization for the successful production of antibodies. Q6. Give a detailed description of the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and compare this technique to other available immunoassays. Q7. Discuss the main properties, attributes, and applications of immunoassays. Include in your answer a discussion of the advantages and limitations of antibodies as binding proteins. Q8. Write an essay on: EITHER (a) The important factors to be considered when optimizing an immunoassay, including the importance of interference on the accuracy of the assay. OR (b) The important role played by validation in the development of new immunoassays and the requirement for both analytical and biological validation.
