Re: Class Schedule
Message:
The Week at A Glance schedule available on the my.longwood website for Longwood University
students has been found an effective document for students to use. The document accurately
responds to its audience of young college students typically ranging in age from 18-22. The
purpose is so that students can easily see their week of classes in just a glance, and not have to
scrutinize the document to find what they want.. This schedule is set up to alleviate some fears
college students may have about time-management. The typeface of the document is large and
bolded, with dominating capital letters for rooms, buildings, and the name of the class. The size
is important here, because it is large and easy to see. It does not take much time to find and
read the text desired. The landscape format of the document also allows the whole week to be
seen at once, without having to travel to additional pages. The text is chunky, but it stands out
because of the various capital letters used, and the usage of numbers.
The arrangement is in typical calendar format or in columns rather. The arrangement of the text
is meant to be blocky, so that each class stands out from the other. It provides clarity, because
everything is so large and easy to find and interpret. Emphasis occurs from the utilizing of light
blue, chunky text, which causes a figure-ground contrast with the white background and
surrounding black text. Conciseness is achieved easily, by not placing in any unnecessary
information within the table that could be found elsewhere on the website. The tone of the
piece is fast paced, easy-going, and easy to read for students who have little experience in time-
management. The document establishes ethos in the form of the calendar, since it is an easily
recognizable template that the students can follow.

Chapter 3, Assignments 1-

  1. The rhetorical situation of this time table is to inform college students of their weekly schedule “at a glance”. The audience is college students, typically ranging in age from 18-22. The purpose is so that students can easily see their week of classes in just a glance, and not have to scrutinize the document to find what they want. The context of the document is that students are busy, active, and occasionally untoward in their approach to time- management. This schedule is set up to alleviate some fears college students may have about time-management.
  2. The typeface of the document is large and bolded, with dominating capital letters for rooms, buildings, and the name of the class. The size is important here, because it is large and easy to see. It does not take much time to find and read the text desired. The shape of the actual page is in landscape format, so that little to no scrolling is necessary. The landscape also allows the whole week to be seen at once, without having to travel to additional pages. The text is chunky, but it stands out because of the various capital letters used, and the usage of numbers. No graphics are on this page, since they would act as a distraction.
  3. The arrangement is in typical calendar format or in columns rather. The arrangement of the text is meant to be blocky, so that each class stands out from the other. It provides clarity, because everything is so large and easy to find and interpret. Emphasis occurs from the utilizing of light blue, chunky text, which causes a figure-ground contrast with the white background and surrounding black text. Conciseness is achieved easily, by not placing in any unnecessary information within the table that could be found elsewhere on the website. The tone of the piece is fast paced, easy-going, but also a little bit “For Dummies” because of its oversimplification. The document establishes ethos in the form of the calendar, since the classes are arranged according to day and time.
