David gallaher, a new zealand rugby player, defied age and lies to serve in the south african war, becoming a squadron sergeant major. He later led the all blacks against australia and the british isles, facing challenges and controversies. His tragic death during world war 1 made him a national hero, with memorials and trophies in his honor.

DEFINITION 2 Dave had been an active soldier before World War 1 when he lied about his age in 1901 when he enlisted to serve in the South African War. He was only 28, when the legal age was
DEFINITION 3 He had a small family of his own which are Nellie his wife and Nora his daughter. Out of his whole family he had 8. His brothers and sisters names were Joseph Isabella James Jane Molly Thomas David and Oswald. Out of all of them sadly four of them passed away. His mother was Maria and his father was James Henry. DEFINITION 4 He played for Ponsonby and Auckland before making his international debut against Australia in Sydney in 1903. The following year he was in the team that defeated the British Isles 9-3 in Wellington. He was placed as the captain for the 1905-06 tour of Britain and France. Some disagreed with his position as they felt he was to old for the job. TERM 5
DEFINITION 5 While boarding the ship to Britain he participated in a tough training which some found very excessive. A team vote was taken while on the way to Britain and 11 of his 29 teammates voted against him. Once the team arrived he quickly asserted himself as an inspirational captain and player.

DEFINITION 6 Soon after war was declared. Dave enlisted for service in the First World War after a younger brother was killed in action. Dave was shot in the face during the attack on Gravenstafel Spur, Belgium on 4 October 1917 and died later that day. His grave at Nine Elms cemetery gives his age as 41- he was actually almost 44. DEFINITION 7 It has become a shrine to many Kiwi tourists and All Black teams alike. His memory lives on as the Gallaher Shield, the symbol of the club authority in Auckland since 1922 and The Dave Gallaher trophy has been played for in rugby series between New Zealand and France since 2000. TERM 8
