Course Description: โ This course will offer you opportunities to develop proficiency in modern Japanese at the intermediate level. Our emphasis is on linguistic competency in four components; listening, speaking, reading and writing. There is, however, another important feature of language, which is the knowledge and understanding of the target culture. The instructor will introduce and explain new expressions and grammar patterns, give you the opportunities to practice them, and help you learn Japanese in daily situations within cultural and social contexts. You will gradually gain higher communicative competency in the Japanese language as a whole. โ This course is designed for those who have completed Japanese 102. If you have taken Japanese at a different university, you must see the instructor immediately regarding placement.
Course Objectives: By the end of the semester, you will be able
Grading: Regular, on-time attendance 5% Active Participation 10% Assignments 10% Language Lab attendance 5% Presentation 5% Quizzes 10% End-of-Lesson Test 15% Midterm Examination 15% Final Examination 25%
Attendance: โ Regular on-time attendance is absolutely necessary. More than 3 absences will negatively affect your grade. Coming in later than 12:10 p. m. will be counted as absence. 3 times of coming in late or leaving early without excusable reason will be also counted as one absence. If you have to leave early for any reason, please notify the instructor before the class starts. It is your responsibility to keep up with what you miss. โ If you are traveling from another campus to this class and are having difficulty getting to class on time, please let the instructor be aware of your situation so that something can be worked out.
Participation: โ In order to participate actively in class with accuracy and fluency, you are expected to read the textbook carefully and learn the vocabulary according to the course schedule before coming to class. You may also utilize audio materials at the Language Lab to prepare for the class. Make sure to review constantly, going back to the earlier lessons frequently. โ Again, please do not come to class without reading the textbook.
Assignments: โ Workbook assignments are regularly assigned. (See Schedule.) There will be additional assignments from time to time. โ Your completed homework should be turned in at the beginning of class on the due date to be accepted for full credit. Those submitted the next day of the due date will earn part of the credit. Those submitted 2 days later than the due date will be corrected, but earn No credit (unless the delay is due to documented illness or emergency). Be sure to check your daily schedule carefully.
one for Lesson 21 will be included in the final examination. โ If you are late to class, you will not be given extra time to complete the tests. โ No make-ups will be arranged unless you have a valid reason (e.g. conference, job interview, illness, etc.) with an official document. Please notify your instructor beforehand if possible.
Midterm Exam & โ You must take the examinations ON THE DAYS SCHEDULED. Final Exam: โ If you are late to class, you wonโt be given extra time to complete the examinations. โ Make-ups will be allowed only with a valid reason. Turn in a doctor โs letter or other official documentation, and arrange the time and place for a make-up ASAP with the instructor. โ Details will be explained in class before each examination.
Academic integrity: โ Academic integrity is an extremely important issue. Students who copy other people's assignments, quizzes, tests, or examinations will not receive any credit. You must NOT give or receive answers to/from other students.
