Anatomy

Answer ONE question in this section. Allow 45 minutes for each answer

  1. Give a clear and structured overview of the regions of the central nervous system involved in the control of voluntary movements.
  2. Give an account of the pituitary gland.

Section B

Physiology

Answer TWO questions in this section. Allow 45 minutes for each answer

  1. Outline the characteristics of the two main types of nociceptors. Explain how we sense a sharp well localised pain followed by a dull aching pain.
  2. Outline the role of the spinal cord, motor cortex and the cerebellum in movement.
  3. Describe the role played by hormones in the control of calcium homeostasis.
  4. Write an essay on the endocrinology of female reproduction.

Section C

Pharmacology

Answer ONE question from this section. Allow 45 minutes for each answer.

  1. Describe the role of dopamine in schizophrenia and Parkinson’s disease. Outline the drugs used to treat these diseases including the mechanism of action and adverse effects.
  2. A range of different anti-cancer drugs can be used to treat breast cancer. Briefly describe the drugs typically used and their mechanism of action. Outline why combination therapy is better than monotherapy when treating cancer. - End -
