What are They?

Conductors: materials that allow the

movement of electrons through them

Insulators: materials that inhibit or

prevent the flow of electrons through them

Semiconductors: insulators that are reasonably good conductors of electricity

What makes a material aninsulator or conductor? Insulator: the electrons are tightly bound to the atoms in the material, so the electrons are not free to move to neighbouring atoms Conductor: the outer electrons are loosely bound and free to move through the material

Applications Electrical wires are made of conducting materials and coated with insulating materials Why use an insulator? to protect us from a large amount of electric charge coming into contact with our bodies if we touched the conductor to prevent electrons from escaping the conductor; discharges are avoided

Technologies such as lightning rods and car frames and bodies are made of conducting materials Laser Printers use conductors and insulators and the law of electric charges to properly function Applications in Technology
