Types of Surveillance Systems

Surveillance

The Investigation Hyperendemic Sporadic Outbreak Holoendemic Outbreak detection Point Source Mixed Outbreak Propagated Outbreak Exposed over days/weeks Types of Surveillance Systems Case reports or lab results to local health dept. by healthcare providers. Nurses (employed by health dept.) may begin a search for cases through contacts w/local health providers/agencies Monitors key health events when info is not otherwise available or to est. dz morbidity in vulnerable pop. Trends monitored & health providers asked to report. Dev. for collecting particular types of data & may be a combo of active, passive and/or sentinal systems Result of bioterrorism. Dev. to monitor illness syndromes or events via automated data systems to report real time or daily dz outbreaks. Objectives Control & prevent dz or death ID factors that contribute to the outbreak of the dz & the occurance of the event Terms to define magnitude of a problem/event. Persistently high number of cases Irregular incidence at irregular time When endemic become epidemic Prob. acquired early in life & decreases w/age d/t adaptive immunity (Malaria & Tracoma) Fx of the investigator. ID an increase in freq. of dz above the usual occurance. Patterns of Occurrence Common Source Outbreak Intermittent or Continuous Source Group exposed to same thing All persons become ill at one time during one incubation period Common source + person to person contact No common source; spreads gradually from person-person (TB) Response to bioterrorism or large-scale infectious dz outbreak: Emergent PH measures such as quarantine, isolation, closing public places, seizing property, mandatory vaccination, travel restrictions, and disposal of the deceased. Protect health care providers via standard precautions.
