How Can We Create Colors?  ALL colors can be created by mixing the primary colors together with black and white  The primary colors are red, , and blue

How to Read the Color Wheel  The color wheel is organized in a specific way  It shows us how colors are created and how colors are related to each other Yellow- Orange Red- Violet

Colors can also be divided into warm and cool colors on the color wheel. Use this color wheel as a guide to fill in the warm and cool colors in your notes.

Complementary  Complementary colors are opposite from each other on the color wheel  Examples of complementary colors are red and green, blue and orange, and violet and yellow.

Three Properties of Color  Hue : the name of the color (i.e. blue)  Value : how light or dark a color is  Intensity : the brightness or dullness of a color

Hue

Hue is the name of the color. Examples: Blue Yellow Ochre Scarlet

Tints and Shades  A tint is created when a color is mixed with white  This makes the color lighter and less intense  A shade is created when a color is mixed with black  This makes the color darker and less intense These tints were made by mixing blue with white These shades were made by mixing blue with black.

Intensity  Intensity is how bright or dull a color is The colors are brighter, or more intense, on the left and duller, or less intense, on the right.

What is a Color Scheme?  Deciding on a color scheme for a piece means deciding on what colors an artwork should use by using the color wheel.

Monochromatic  Monochromatic color schemes use one color only, but use many tints and shades of that color
