Diodes are bipolar semiconductor components and consist of an n-conducting and a p-conducting layer. Anode Cathode Free charges carries electrons are predominant in the n-cond. Layers and holes in the p-cond. Layer. Between these layers there is a p-n junction which has an internal diffusion potential .so that the diode is blocked. When we apply an external voltage the semiconductor diode transmits the current in one direction only. A diode needs definite minimum voltage to forward the current.. This voltage is known as threshold voltage Uth.
