ARMOR MANUAL
WELCOME SCI-OPERATIVE! Your armor is an essential defense against THE
HIVE's attacks, but we need to understand why it is malfunctioning after being
blasted with a beam from THE HIVE's latest machine. As you move through this
training manual, pay special attention to the composition of the armor material so we can
determine how to better defend ourselves against THE HIVE.
To complete this training session log into your SCI-OPS: GLOBAL DEFENSE account
(https://play.plasma.games) and use the information given to you about the armor in the
laboratory and in the accompanying videos.

ATOMIC STRUCTURE

NAME:

OBJECTIVE 2: UNDERSTANDING WHAT ARMOR IS MADE OF Make sure you have completed level 2, including upgrading your armor, in order to view the lab text. Remember to click on blue words to open a separate vocab box with more information Continue to USE THE TEXT IN THE LABORATORY to learn the information needed to complete the blanks below:

PROTONS HAVE A CHARGE. The number of protons is unique to each element and symbolized by the.

NEUTRONS HAVE CHARGE. Neutrons are similar in size to protons and keep like charged protons from repelling one another. The number of neutrons and protons in the nucleus are not always equal. Neutrons must be calculated using the atomic mass and atomic number.

ELECTRONS HAVE A CHARGE.

Electrons move quickly around the nucleus in the , represented here as rings. The electrons cloud is made up of. The mass of an electron is so small that it is considered negligible.

OBJECTIVE 3: UNDERSTANDING THE PERIODIC TABLE In order to figure out how many protons, neutrons, and electrons there are in an atom, we first need to know how to read the PERIODIC TABLE OF ELEMENTS. Each box on a Periodic Table will have a series of symbols and numbers shown. Some Periodic Tables will also add in additional specialized information for specific uses. However, no matter the Periodic Table, there are four main pieces of information that are included: The ATOMIC NUMBER, ATOMIC MASS, ELEMENT SYMBOL, and ELEMENT NAME. We can use this information to figure out the structure of an atom.

Protons, electrons, and neutrons are called SUBATOMIC PARTICLES and are too small to see with an optical microscope. Size at an atomic level is measured in nanoscale!

How do these subatomic particles compare in size, location, and mass?

OBJECTIVE 4: PRACTICE IT! Continue your practice with atomic structure using the Field Guide: Periodic Table by filling in the missing information in the chart below.
