Internet-ready TV

DEFINITION 10 Television set that allows viewers to watch TV shows as well as go online to get news, stream movies, view photos, and the like.

Podcasting

The recording of internet radio or similar internet audio programs. TERM 17

Point-and-shoot camera

DEFINITION 17 A camera, either film or digital, that automatically adjusts settings such as exposure and focus. Generally such cameras cost under $500. TERM 18

DEFINITION 18 Small portable devices that enable you to play digital audio, video, and/or still-image files. TERM 19

Ringtone

DEFINITION 19 The audible sound a phone makes to announce that a call is coming in. A ringtone may be an old-fashioned ring, ring or a clip from a popular song. TERM 20

Sampling

DEFINITION 20 The number of times, expressed in kilobits per second, that a song is measured (sampled) and converted to a digital value when it is being recorded as a digital file.

Satellite radio

Also called digital radio; a radio service in which signals are sent from satellites in orbit around the Earth to subscribers owning special radios that can decode the encrypted signals. TERM 22

Single-lens reflex (SLR) camera

DEFINITION 22 A camera, either film or digital, that has a mirror that reflects the incoming light in such a way that the scene viewed by the viewer through the viewfinder is the same was whats famed by the lens. TERM 23

Smartphone

DEFINITION 23 Cellular telephone with microprocessor, memory, display screen, and built-in modem. TERM 24

SMS (Short Message Service)

DEFINITION 24 A text message service originally designed for GSM mobile phones but now available on a range of networks, including 3G networks. TERM 25

Standard-definition television (SDTV)

DEFINITION 25 A TV standard that has a lower resolution than HDTV, a minimum of 480 vertical lines, and a picture quality similar to that required to watch DVD movies.
