PLANT PHYSIOLOGY
CHAPTER 10 - Stomatal Biology
1. Guard cell structure, function and location
a. Turgor pressure changes in guard cells induces
stomatal changes by mechanical
forces
b. Stomas close at night (photosynthesis NOT happening)
c. Stomas open during the day (photosynthesis
happening)
d. Increased CO2 demand in leaf INCREASES turgor
pressure which opens stomatas
e. Need to reduce water use (aka water is limiting)
=>>>>>>>>> decrease in turgor pressure =>>>>>>which
closes stomas
f. The exiting of water is what causes the turgor pressure
to go down=>>>>>>>>>>>close the pore
g. Water and oxygen leave and CO2 enters
h. Stomates allow plants to:
i. Efficiently exchange gases in a dry environment
ii. transpiration
iii. Conserve water

PLANT PHYSIOLOGY

CHAPTER 10 - Stomatal Biology

1. Guard cell structure, function and location a. Turgor pressure changes in guard cells induces stomatal changes by mechanical forces b. Stomas close at night (photosynthesis NOT happening) c. Stomas open during the day (photosynthesis happening) d. Increased CO2 demand in leaf INCREASES turgor pressure which opens stomatas e. Need to reduce water use (aka water is limiting) =>>>>>>>>> decrease in turgor pressure =>>>>>>which closes stomas f. The exiting of water is what causes the turgor pressure to go down=>>>>>>>>>>>close the pore g. Water and oxygen leave and CO2 enters h. Stomates allow plants to: i. Efficiently exchange gases in a dry environment ii. transpiration iii. Conserve water

PLANT PHYSIOLOGY

2.What activates guard cells to open stomatal pores? a. Blue light is the magical key to regulating stomate function b. Stomate opening/closing is regulated by: i. Photosynthesis in the guard cell chloroplast

  1. Guard cell job is not doing photosynthesis but is sensing how much photosynthesis is the plant capable of doing so the pore can be manipulated accordingly ii. Blue light iii. Low intercellular CO2 levels (indirect-caused by mesophyll) c. Opening and closing is rapid and reversible d. Blue light response driven by: i. Osmoregulatory mechanism ii. Blue-light activated H+ ATPase
