Cell Parts and Function Notes
1) Cell Membrane
-Surrounds the cell and controls the movement of materials
into and out of the cell.
-Made up of phospholipid molecules
2) Cytoplasm
-The jelly- like material that fills the space between the cell
membrane and the nucleus. It contains all of the organelles
and many reactions occur here.
3) Nucleus
-“The brain of the cell” or the Control Center of the cell”.
-The largest and most visible organelle
-Contains the DNA (genetic material)
-The nucleus is surrounded by a membrane .
- The dark spot in the center of the nucleus is called the
nucleolus, which stores materials that will be used later to
make ribosomes in the cytoplasm.
4) Mitochondria
-Known as the “Powerhouse of the Cell”
-Bean Shaped organelles which are surrounded by
two membranes (matrix)
- Uses oxygen to make ATP (energy)

Cell Parts and Function Notes

1) Cell Membrane

  • Surrounds the cell and controls the movement of materials into and out of the cell. -Made up of phospholipid molecules 2) Cytoplasm -The jelly- like material that fills the space between the cell membrane and the nucleus. It contains all of the organelles and many reactions occur here. 3) Nucleus -“The brain of the cell” or the Control Center of the cell”. -The largest and most visible organelle -Contains the DNA (genetic material) -The nucleus is surrounded by a membrane.
  • The dark spot in the center of the nucleus is called the nucleolus, which stores materials that will be used later to make ribosomes in the cytoplasm. 4) Mitochondria -Known as the “Powerhouse of the Cell” -Bean Shaped organelles which are surrounded by two membranes (matrix)
  • Uses oxygen to make ATP (energy)

5) Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) Transports materials from the nucleus to other parts of the cell -Membrane covered compartment that makes lipids and other materials for use inside and outside the cell. -Breaks down drugs and certain other chemicals that could damage the cells 6) Ribosomes The “Protein Factories” of cell. They can be free-floating in the cytoplasm or attached to the surface of the Endoplasmic Reticulum. -They are the smallest and most abundant organelles -Not covered with a membrane. 7) Golgi Bodies Stacks of membranes which proteins and other materials need to be processed and shipped out of eukaryotic cells. Processes, packages, and transports materials sent to it from the E.R. -Packages and secretes substances into the environment outside of the cell. -These substances pinch off in small membrane covered compartments called vesicles 8) Vacuoles -Used for storage of materials in cells (ex: food or waste)

  • If you want to have crispy lettuce for salad, all you need to do is fill the vacuoles by leaving the lettuce in water over night -Colorful flowers have colorful liquid in their vacuoles.
