CONTRAINDICATIONS & PRECAUTIONS:
cephalosporin antibiotic; third-generation cephalosporin
binds to one or more of the penicillin-binding
proteins located on cell walls of susceptible
organisms; this inhibits third and final stages of
bacterial cell wall synthesis, thus killing the
bacterium.
infections caused by susceptible organisms in
lower respiratory tract, skin, and skin structures,
urinary tract, bones and joints; also
intra-abdominal infections, pelvic inflammatory
disease, uncomplicated gonorrhea, meningitis,
and surgical prophylaxis.
known hypersensitivity to cephalosporins; viral infections;
neonates with hyperbilirubinemia 28 days or younger;
neonates with calcium-containing infusions; signs and
symptoms of gallbladder disease.
IV/IM: 1 - 2g q12-24h x 4 - 14 days
max: 4g/day
skin: warmth, tightness, or induration at injection site
GI: diarrhea
hematologic: eosinophilia, thrombocythemia
1.5 - 4 h after IM; immediately after IV
5-10 hours
drug: probenecid: decreases renal elimination of ceftriaxone;
effect of warfarin may be increased
report any signs of bleeding
report loose stools or diarrhea promptly
determine history of hypersensitivity reactions to cephalosporins and penicillins
inspect injection sites for induration and inflammation
monitor for manifestations of hypersensitivity
watch for and report: petechiae, ecchymotic areas, epistaxis, or any unexplained bleeding
report promptly development of diarrhea
monitor lab tests
