Nicole Wallack 11 February 2011 CASE STUDY QUESTIONS Case Study # 21
1. What do you see as the major problems or issues to be addressed? The main problem in this case study is that the teacher, Sam Goodman, used certain techniques and procedures one year, which are not working as well the second year. He doesn’t know what to do to make them as successful as they were the previous year. There is a group of four students who do not want to do the work and are always finding excuses. 2. What do you see as the goals in this situation? The goals in the situation are to help the students get their work done and find an appropriate way in which to go about it. Sam needs to find a way that will get these students motivated to do their work if the enrichment lab is not good enough. 3. What would you do as the major educator or person in authority (cannot be a parent or student) in this situation? If I were Sam I would talk to the four students more in depth and one-on-one. I would try to figure out where they were coming from and why they really did not want to do the work and have fun with the rest of the class. I would also have an in-person conference with each student’s parent and talk to him or her about ways to get their child to do the homework. Finally, I would sit down with each student and help them complete the work and see what they are struggling with and how it can be fixed. 4. What theories and or concepts do you see manifested in this study? NOTE: You need to use at least one piece of a theory or one concept recently addressed in class. a. Piaget’s Cognitive Process of Accommodation b. The adjustment of information or processes c. In the case study, Sam has to accommodate for the four students that are not working to their potential. He has to figure out ways to motivate the students to get them to complete their assignments. a. Kohlberg’s Conventional Level b. Moral decisions are based on loyalty and desire to please parents.
c. David makes up excuses to tell his mother as to why he is not doing his homework. He wants to please his parents by making them think that he is not the one who is wrong and that it is the teachers fault that he is not succeeding. He tells his mother that Sam scares him and puts pressure on him. His mother then believes that it is the teacher’s fault that he is not doing his work and David has pleased his parents. A. Diana Baumrind’s Authoritative Style B. Limits are set while allowing the child to make their own choices within those limits. C. An example of this is when Sam, the teacher, sets the rules and limits for the weekly assignments for his math class. He tells the students that they are to turn in their assignments by Friday and they will be aloud to go to the lab. If they don’t turn them in they do not get to go to the lab and must complete their assignment and write a letter to their parents. He provides them with the choice as to what they want to do when it comes to completing their assignments, but he also sets limits as to what happens when they are not done.
5. What theories and concepts would YOU use to remedy this situation? NOTE: You CANNOT take on the role of a parent or student or any other child. a. Vygotsky’s Second Assumption b. Cognitive skills are mediated by language, which serve as tools for facilitation and transforming mental activity. c. Sam could mediate the skills of the students that are causing trouble and see if he really could see the reasons they were not doing their work. He seemed to notice that the boys formed a group and all did not do their work together. He could look deeper into this and figure out what is causing this by talking to them. d. Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development e. Assessing the range of the task difficulty. f. As the teacher I would access the difficulty for each student. If the task is too hard some students will just not want to complete it. If I were Sam I would analyze each student to see if the material was too hard. If it was, I would give them some other similar assignments that were a little less challenging and at their level. g. Diana Baumrind’s Authoritarian Parenting Style h. The child has no input in decisions concerning them. They are expected to follow rules unquestioningly. i. If I were Sam, I would make them do the work without questions. They will just continue to mess around if they have to make the choice on their own. They are not capable of making the right choice to do their
