Case Study: Dunkin’ Donuts District Manager Plan Ashford University MGT330: Management for Organizations
Introduction Dunkin’ Donuts is one of the largest restaurant chains in the United States and focuses on coffee and breakfast foods serving over three million customers a day at over twelve thousand locations nationwide(Dunkin' history, para. 1). Dunkin’ Donuts is not alone in their market with significant competitors such as Starbucks, Krispy Kreme, Peet’s Coffee, and McDonald’s. Remaining competitive requires focusing on providing a quality product at a reasonable cost with impeccable customer service. As Dunkin’ Donuts district manager for five new locations, these aspects must be considered, analyzed, and implemented. The opening of new locations will necessitate attention to job design in establishing a team committed to upholding Dunkin’ Donuts standards of quality service and establishing organizational designto ensure the stability, growth, and success of these sites. Dunkin’ Donuts Overview Dunkin’ Donuts’ first coffee and donut shop opened in 1948 in Quincy, Massachusetts. Founder Will Rosenburg’s goal was to “make and serve thefreshest, most delicious coffee and donuts quickly and courteously in modern, well-merchandised stores” (Dunkin’ history, para. 1). By 1965, Rosenburg had grown his coffee shop to over one hundred locations. With the expansion of sites came the evolution of the product, and by the mid-1970s, Dunkin’ Donuts began to serve a wide variety of breakfast foods. Currently, Dunkin’ Donuts has “more than 12,600 worldwide, with locations in 40 countries. The company serves approximately 2 billion cups of hot and iced coffee every year, with standards for coffee excellence thatare among the best in the industry” (Dunkin’ history, para. 5). The opening of these five new locations is part of Dunkin’ Donuts’ long-term plan to expand to over eighteen thousand U.S locations.
clean, stock, handle phones, retail, and drive-thru, always remembering to exhibit exceptional customer service. The second piece of job design is the job description. Job descriptions will “provide workers with clarity regarding which tasks they are and are not assigned to do” (Donald Baack, 2014, sec. 3.2). It is ideal to hire staff “whose values align with the purposes of your organization, it’s a win-win. Craft the job description to invitethose people to apply” (Johnson, 2020, p. 5). The job description will outline all of the information from the specific position’s job analysis. It will also focus on outlining opportunities for meaningful work, career growth, and the impact of their given role. The final portion of the job description is job specification, which is the process of obtaining information related to a specific job, such as the knowledge, skills, and ability needed to perform the job effectively. A site manager will need to have prior experience in leadership, preferably management. It would also be ideal that the site manager comes from a business- oriented career background and is comfortable in a labor-management partnership environment. The assistant manager should also have prior leadership experience. Their business background may be less extensive, but they must have good communication and problem-solving skills. The shift lead will need to be comfortable in leadership and be willing to train and lead other employees in day to day tasks. For all management positions Dunkin’ Donuts would have a preference to promote within the organization. If At All Possible, a shift lead would have prior experience working at Dunkin’ Donuts but it is not essential. The crew members do not need previous experience but must be willing to learn skills and follow directions.
Organizational Design Organizational design will help Dunkin’ Donuts to compete in the market and achieve its goals. “Organizational design is the process by which managers make specific organizing choices that result in the particular kind of organizational structure for the company” (Donald Baack, 2014, sec. 3.1). Because Dunkin’ Donuts is a massive franchise, they have an organizational design already in place. Dunkin’ Donuts uses a divisional structure approach to organization design. Divisional structure is characterized as an “organization that divides its employees and other resources into different groups based on regional and product differences, such that each group is responsible and answerable for its own actions” (Sobiya, para. 1). The five new locations will be run separately from the other franchise locations, with the district manager having complete autonomy, authority and responsibility to structure. Although the Dunkin’ Donuts franchise follows divisional structure in the five new locations, simple structure will be the best option. When simple structure is implemented, all employees report to the owner or, in this case, the district manager. Using simple structure will benefit these locations because the district manager will have complete control, so there will be fewer reporting layers, allowing issues to be addressed and decisions to be made quickly. Conclusion Dunkin’ Donuts is a very successful coffee and breakfast chain. Due to their continued success, their long-term goal is to increase their locations from twelve thousand to over eighteen thousand. As the new district manager of five locations, it is imperative to ensure their success. There are many factors necessary to consider when opening a business, such as Dunkin’ Donuts. Attention must be placed on using job design to create a team committed to quality, profitability,
