  1. A significant aspect of midwifery care during labour is assessment of the rate and pattern of the fetal heart rate. (a) Critically discuss the research evidence on methods available to monitor the fetal heart rate and pattern during labour. (50 marks) (b) Systematically describe the features used, including normal parameters and documentation, in the interpretation of cardiotocography tracings. (50 marks)
  2. Critically discuss the care of a woman, and her baby, with an occipito-posterior position in labour. (100 marks)
  3. Where pregnancy is prolonged, women need information about the possible risks to their own health and their baby’s if they are to be able to make an informed choice. Critically discuss the risks of prolonged pregnancy, the options for elective induction of labour or expectant management and the potential benefits or risks of these. (100 marks)
  4. ‘Amniotic fluid embolism is a rare, usually fatal, cause of sudden maternal collapse in labour’ (Chapman, 2004:189). Critically discuss the incidence, predisposing factors, signs and symptoms and care of a woman presenting with an amniotic fluid embolism. END
