1. Call to Order - Beth Behrendt called the meeting to order at 8:32 a.m.
6. Secretary’s Report – Jill Surendran - Volunteer descriptions and fundraising events were updated on the website at the start of the year. - Jill remains the liason between PA and Natalie Trout in the marketing department. - If an event coordinator needs more volunteers for at upcoming event, they are to contact Jill. A request for volunteers will be included in the Morning Update, and Division Directors will be kindly asked to include a call out for volunteers in their weekly parent emails. All communications, marketing and promoting questions are to go to Jill. 7. Q & A with Bill Ennist - Bill thanked parents for their continued support of the school. Thanked current Executive Committee for remaining in their roles an additional year. Encouraged parents to direct questions, comments and concerns to Division Directors, Administrators and PA Reps. o Q : What does the future look like for the Canterbury community with all of the administrative changes happening? o A : The school remains the same. The evolution of the school with faculty and administrators retiring and leaving is natural. The quality of education remains the same, as does the level of care for our children. The goal is to hire the very best person to fill these positions. One function of the f Board of Trustees (BOT) is to hire the Head of School. They are also responsible for the strategic direction of the school. Further information will be forthcoming. Ben Ottenweller will lead the search for Division Director replacements of Cherie Bowen and Katie Burrows. BOT will lead the search for Head of School replacement. o Q : Will the results of the 6th^ and 8th^ Grade Scholar Challenge be announced before FAST applications are filled out? o A : Scholars will be announced in January in time for FAST applications to be filled out. o Q : How does the school find their substitute teachers and what are the requirements? It has become more common to see parents filling these roles. o A : Lower School – applicants must have a Bachelors degree and interview with Katie Burrows. Katie feels that parents are good substitute options for short term needs. Long-term subs are preferred to have teaching background. Parents are not allowed to sub in their childs’ classroom. Middle School – similar process occurs. Interview is held with Fraser Coffeen and the sub is asked to shadow a classroom before subbing. All substitute teachers have background checks completed. Long-term subs are preferred to have a teaching degree in the specialty area in which they are subbing. High School – The substitute list is very small for high school. Occasionally, if a teacher is absent for a day, the class is is canceled and students are required to check Moodle for classroom assignments. Long tem subs are ideally discipline specific retired teachers. o Q: Can you please explain the roll of Ashely Bunn? o A: Tamara Lombard was the former school counselor for all divisions. Tamara now works part time as a counselor, five hours a week, exclusively in the High School. Times in the day vary. Ashley Bunn will be working 20 hours a week with EC, LS and MS students. She has a background in behavioral and social counseling and is able to make recommendations based on her observations in the classroom. Her office is located in the Lower School. o Q: Can you speak to the enrollments numbers and will there be a cap on enrollment? o A: Enrollment trends have been looked at over the past years, and it has been observed that enrollment numbers are declining. The school has deliberately decided to bend the financial aide curve down a bit. Our financial aide levels are higher than the industry average, which is normally 20% of the operating budget. Canterbury’s average is higher than that. Goal is to be closer to industry standard for independent schools. Full paid and fuller paid market have declined over last ten years. Goal is address why. Independent schools have noticed the shift in perception of the necessity of an independent school education. Millennial parents will invest the money but want to be reminded that their investment is a good one. Announcement was
