WHERE:- The genocide obviously took place in Cambodia-
Cambodia is a country in Southeast Asia and is less than half
the size of California- In 1953 Cambodia gained it's
independence from France after nearly 100 years of
colonialist rule

WHEN:-The actions of the Khmer R ouge government which
actually constitute genocide began shortly after their seizure of
power from the government of Lon N ol in 1975, and lasted until
the Khmer Rouge was overthrown b y the Vietnamese in 1978.-This
atmosphere of communal unrest in C ambodia arose during the
French decolonization of Southeast A sia in the early 1950s, and
continued to devastate the region u ntil the late 1980s.

WHY:-The Khmer Rouge saw cities as the heart of the
capitalism and therefor they had to be eliminated- The goal
of converting everyone to peasants was due to the fact that
this class of people was believed to be uneducated, hard
working, and not prone to exploiting others

STAGE 5: Polarization - It was common for people to get shot
if they were speaking a foreign language,wearing glasses,
smiling, or crying- Cities were raided and people relocated to
communal farms- Most people were left to starve, dehydrate,
or work to deathInternational organizations offered aid, but

opposition to Vietnam and communis m-People were given a blue

DEFINITION 6 STAGE 7: EXTERMINATION-The population was put to work as laborers in one federation of collective forms-Anyone in opposition was killed-Anyone refusing to leave their home, didn't go fast enough, or disobeyed was killed- The army was killed- All Monks, and about 8,000 Christians were murdered TERM 7

DEFINITION 7 STAGE 8: DENIAL- The US tried to cover it up and The US and Cambodians were at a secret war with eachother
