Known for solitary, scholarly pursuit of enlightenment.Theravada Buddhists strive to becomearhats, or perfected saints who have attained enlightenment and nirvana who will not be reborn again. This is considered to only be possible for monks and nuns, who devote their entire lives to the task. It is not available to people from all walks of life.Because of their focus on personal attainment and its requirement that one must renounce the world to achieve salvation, Mahayana Buddhists refer toTheravada Buddhismas the Small Vehicle.
