Aegrotat awards do not provide eligibility to register with the Health Professions Council. Failure and Reassessment Students will be permitted to be reassessed in up to the following number of credits at the following levels: FHEQ Level 4 – 12 0 credits (as per SR2) FHEQ Level 5 – 50 taught credits (excluding any professional placement modules) FHEQ Level 6 – 50 taught credits (excluding any professional placement modules) Due to the increased opportunities to accumulate failed credits at FHEQ level 4 within the BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy programme the exam board may permit a student to undertake reassessment in up to 60 credits at FHEQ level 4 within the same academic year. Failure of a professional development assessment block raises serious concerns about a student’s professional suitability irrespective of academic achievement on other assessments. Where a student has failed a professional development assessment block, the examination board may not progress the student or not submit the student for re- assessment. The examination board may: afford the student another opportunity to achieve the professional requirements by retaking study/assessment/module blocks the following year on a self-funded basis; or submit the student for re-assessment with recommendations to undertake appropriate learning and support activities. This strategy provides a balance between safeguarding professional requirements and providing students with sufficient support and opportunities to meet professional standards of conduct and ethics. Progression: Where a clinical practice study block has not been completed at the normal time due to organisational issues or has been deferred due to accepted mitigation, the exam board may permit a student to progress where a clinical practice study/assessment block has not yet been completed. Assessment of practice placement modules: In accord with the aims and learning outcomes of them programme, to produce competent clinicians, failure of a practice placement is viewed as a serious matter. Therefore, where a student fails more than one clinical practice assessment block at the first attempt within a level they will be required to withdraw from the programme. All students are required to undertake specified periods of placement. Every attempt is made to match students’ placement needs. Students may not unreasonably reject the offer of a placement setting nor are they permitted to unilaterally discontinue a placement setting once commenced. The University and the placement provider may terminate a placement setting only with good cause. Students who wish to discontinue a placement setting must gain the agreement of the University before they may discontinue the placement setting; relevant procedures are defined in the placement handbook. Where, after due process as defined in the relevant placement handbook, a student’s progress in a placement setting is judged as irredeemable, the placement setting may be terminated early by the University and placement provider. An ‘irredeemable’ judgement will be made only where the student’s progress in the placement setting is such that it will not be possible for the student to meet the assessment requirements of the placement module/block within the remaining standard period of the current placement setting. Attendance requirements Since the award of BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy also confers eligibility to apply for registration with the Health Professions Council, attendance
on campus and placements is considered essential to facilitate safe practice. Students are expected to attend at least 80% of the practicals / tutorials in academic module/study/assessment blocks and 100% of placement assessment/study blocks. Attendance is monitored and assessed within the professional development assessment blocks at all levels. Where a student does not meet the attendance requirement for a module/study/assessment block they will be awarded a fail in the professional development assessment block and be considered by the exam board as detailed above under failure and re-assessment. Professional Suitability Certain behaviours may indicate that a student is professionally unsuitable. Where the professional suitability of a student is questioned the student will be considered under Senate Regulation 14

Learning/teaching strategies and methods to enable learning outcomes to be achieved, including formative assessments The programme has adopted learning and teaching strategies that will encourage students to become independent learners. Students will be expected to take responsibility for identifying their learning needs and accessing appropriate learning resources. The programme provides students with a variety of learning and teaching methods. Knowledge and skills are acquired and consolidated through the use of lectures, study guides, seminars, practical tutorials, clinical practice placements and e-learning resources. Clinical skills are key aspects of this professional course. Students are provided with opportunities to develop their clinical skills across all academic and clinical practice placement modules. The links between academic and clinical modules are consistently emphasised to enable students to transfer their knowledge and skills across all aspects of the programme. Students are encouraged to use their clinical and academic experiences within all modules. The development of professional and transferable skills is embedded within all modules. Through the use of directed CPD activities and tutorial support, students are required to develop professional and transferable skills throughout the programme. Students are encouraged to utilise all forms of feedback from summative and formative assessments to support their learning and development – for example, students are required to complete self-appraisal and develop feed forward, action plans in response to summative assessment feedback. Summative assessment strategies and methods to enable learning outcomes to be demonstrated A variety of assessment methods are used throughout the programme to assess knowledge and understanding, and provide feedback (summative and formative). For example: Knowledge and understanding is assessed through unseen examinations, vivas, assignments, Clinical Assessment Records, CPD portfolios and online assessments. The assessment of cognitive skills is achieved by the use of case studies, clinical assessment reports, practical vivas and essays. The students at FHEQ level 6 are encouraged to direct their own learning by choosing an area for critical review and then developing their own research proposal (PH3600). Practical and professional skills are assessed through a variety of summative and formative assessment methods including clinical assessment reports, professional assessments. Transferable skills are assessed in all modules by essays, clinical assessment forms, vivas etc. 25.
