Analysis of Homologous Binding and Leucine Binding to RNA, Exams of Biology

Answers to various questions related to the concepts of homologous binding and leucine binding to RNA. interpreting data, making inferences, drawing conclusions, and further analysis. The document also includes details of two experiments, Experiment A and Experiment B, which involve the study of ssDNA and RNA respectively.

What you will learn

  • What is the dependent variable in the graph for homologous binding?
  • Why does the fraction of ssDNA bound to dsDNA not increase with time for 162 nucleotide ssDNA molecules?
  • What is the role of ssDNA loop formation in homologous binding?

Answer all of the following questions and submit them on black board by 11:30 PM March 28th 2021.
Answer each questions fully. If there is a part a, b, etc. make sure that you indicate which answer is for
which part. Not doing so will result in a loss of points for that question as it is difficult to separate out
paragraph answers that have no clear indication to which sub-question is being answered.

  1. Applying concepts: a. In the graph, the dependent variable is the fraction of homologously paired molecules. b. ssDNA is being paired with ssDNA.
  2. Interpreting Data:

ssDNA, and compare that to nucleotides with a number higher than 430. The way that I would investigate that possibility is by looking at the graph that was already given to me, and researching credible articles on this information before doing an experiment.

Experiment B

  1. Applying concepts: a. The dependent variable is the radioactivity.
  2. Interpreting Data a. When monitored for 20 minutes, the level of radioactivity in the small RNA decreases. b. Over the same period, the level of radioactivity in the newly made protein increases and then decreases slightly.
  3. Making Inferences a. The same amount of radioactivity being lost from the small RNA is being gained by the newly made protein
  4. Drawing Conclusions a. It is reasonable to conclude that the small RNA is donating its amino acid to the growing protein. b. The amino acid that would be radioactively labeled would be C-12.
