  1. Herrnstein famously stated, “All behavior is choice.” Identify an instance where you engaged in ethical behavior. a. What alternative ethical behaviors could you have emitted at that moment of choice? b. What alternative unethical behaviors could you have emitted at that moment of choice? An instance where I engaged in ethical behavior was when I was working with a young autistic client on reinforcement of behaviors. This particular client was responding well to the reinforcement strategies being exhibited and demonstrating the positive behavior that everyone hoped to see. Upon ending the session and walking the client to the exit, another parent stopped me and asked about the young client regarding what his issues were and how I turned his behavior around. This is the moment where a choice had to be made. I chose to tell this parent that they were welcome to speak with the company patient recruitment person about the issues they would like assistance with regarding their child and the type of assistance that was available. I did not mention anything about my client or his specific issues, which are personal, private, and confidential. An alternative ethical behavior that I could have emitted at that moment of choice would have been to speak about some general examples of how we turn around negative behavior without including anything about my client. An alternative unethical behavior that I could have emitted at that moment of choice would have been to actually answer the question that the parent asked about my client and explain what I was doing with my client specifically.
  2. We identified several areas from the basic literature that influence your ethical behavior (i.e., the amount of reinforcers for alternative behaviors, delay discounting, and probability discounting). What are other areas of basic research that influence your clinical and ethical decisions? There are other areas of basic research that can be used to influence my clinical and ethical decisions. The BACB ethics code is something that I rely on when making

4 for the clinician to have both the most time possible and the most reliable prior information obtainable when making decisions.

  1. We identified several areas from the clinical decision-making literature that influence your ethical behavior (i.e., time to decide, amount of information, expertise and education, availability of resources). What are other contextual variables that influence your clinical and ethical decisions? Other contextual variables that influence clinical and ethical decisions are varied. Contextual features including the family of the client, religious considerations, and legal considerations influence clinical decisions (Jonsen et al., 2015). These features could help determine the type of reinforcement that will be best received by the client. Decisions that follow ethical guidelines could use the contextual factors of client preferences and expectations regarding outcome of the treatment (Jonsen et al., 2015). Determining clinical decisions to change behavior through reinforcement is simpler when utilizing contextual variables.
