(a) Explain the concept of a hierarchical network. (4 marks)

(b) Explain the difference between satellite and wireless. (5 marks)

(c) Define the terms DTE and DCE. Explain the difference between them and list some devices that are classed as DTE and DCE. (6 marks)

(d) Explain the following terms: (i) Routing protocol (ii) Routed protocol (iii) Autonomous systems (iv) Interior routing protocols (v) Exterior routing protocols (10 marks)

(a) Explain the following OSPF terminology. (i) Area (ii) Adjacency database (iii) Linkstate database (iv) Forwarding database (v) Cost (10 marks)

(b) Given the following diagram, write out the OSPF configuration required on each router. The networks are 192.168.14.0/30 and 192.168.15.0/ (5 marks)

(c) Explain the difference between a DR and a BDR and how they are elected. (5 marks)

(d) OSPF routers rely on 5 different kinds of packets to identify their neighbours and to update link-state routing information. Explain the 5 kinds of packets. (5 marks) Question 3

(a) Explain the difference between dynamic and static VLAN’s and when you would use each type. (5 marks)

(b) Explain the two types of Layer 3-based VLAN’s, listing the advantages and disadvantages of each. (7 marks)

(c) Give a detailed explanation of the 3 VTP modes. (6 marks)

(d) Given the following diagram, write out the VLAN and VTP configuration required on the three switches, using the central one as the server. (7 marks)

(a) With regard to VOIP, explain the different types of convergence. (6 marks)

(b) What services are provided by the Real Time Transport Protocol (RTP) and the Real-time Transport Control Protocol (RTCP)? (6 marks)

(c) Explain the IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN standard. (5 marks)

(d) In the context of WLANs, explain the following: (i) Basic Service Set (BSS) (ii) Independent BSS (IBSS) (iii) Extended Service Set (ESS) (iv) Distribution system (DS) (8 marks)
