PURPOSE OF MEDICATION

- An inhibitor of HMG-COA, an enzyme essential to
hepatic production of cholesterol.
-Reduces LDL and total triglyceride production as well
as increasing plasma level of high-density lipids.
- Adjunct to diet for the reduction of LDL cholesterol
and triglycerides in patients with hypercholesterolemia.
- Prevention of cardiovascular disease in patients with
multiple factors.
- Acute liver disease, persistent transaminase elevations, hepatitis,
uncontrolled seizure disorders.
- Cautious: Hypersensitivity to other HMG-COA reducta se
inhibitors: Liver disease, renal impairment, alcohol use
- Adult PO: 10-40 mg daily, may increase up to
80 mg/day
-Children PO: Start with 10 mg daily, may
increase up 20mg/day
- Back pain, headache, insomnia, abdominal pain, increased liver
function tests, rash, pharyngitis, urinary tract infections
- May increase digoxin levels 20%, grape fruit juice, cyclosporine,
clofibrate, eryth romycin increas es levels 40%
- monitor diabetics for loss of hypoglycemic control and monitor
effectiveness, assess for muscle pain/weakness, monitor for digoxin
toxicity, monitor lab tests
- Onset: Cholesterol reduction- 2 wk.
-Peak: Plasma concentration 1-2 h; effect 2-
4 wk.
- Report any muscle pain, fever, jaundice,
and nausea. Do not take during pregnancy
can cause birth defects. Inform provider of
any other medications taken. Minimize
alcohol intake.
