  1. The diagram below represents the different layers of Earth’s Atmosphere. a. First, label each layer with the appropriate name (you’ll need to write small to fit the name inside of the layer). b. The box to the right gives you specific information about each layer of the atmosphere. Use this information to help you color the layers according to what the information gives you.
  2. A mnemonic is a tool used for helping our memory. For example, a mnemonic for remembering the order of the planets would be: M y M ercury V ery V enus E xcellent E arth M other M ars J ust J upiter S erved S aturn U s U ranus N achos N eptune a. Use the box to the right to come up with your own mnemonic to help you remember the order of the atmospheric layers. Name: _______________________________________________________ Study Guide Assigned: _______________________ Study Guide Due: _______________________ A day test date: _______________________ B day test date: _______________________
  3. This layer contains the ozone layer. Color this layer orange.
  4. This layer is where we can find the northern lights (or the aurora borealis). Color this layer green.
  5. This layer is where all weather occurs. Color this layer red.
  6. This layer is the outer most layer of the Thermosphere and it is also where satellites orbit. Color this layer blue.
  7. This higher you go in this layer, the temperature reaches -‐ 90 oC. This is also where most meteors burn up. Color this layer yellow. OR &
  1. Fill in the following chart with ONE unique description for each of the atmospheric layers. (pg. 8 – 11) a. Next, write the word HIGHEST in the layer in which the air density is the highest. Also, write the word LOWEST in the layer in which the air density is the lowest. b. Next, write the word HIGHEST in the layer in which the temperature is the highest. Also, write the word LOWEST in the layer in which the temperature is the lowest. c. Next, write the word HIGHEST in the layer in which the air pressure is the highest. Also, write the word LOWEST in the layer in which the air pressure is the lowest. Layer Description/Interesting Fact Air Density Temperature Air Pressure Thermosphere Satellites orbit Earth in the Exosphere. Lowest Lowest^ Lowest The northern lights occur in the Ionosphere. Mesosphere Meteors burn up in the Mesosphere. Stratosphere The Ozone Layer is located in the Stratosphere. 24 % of all molecules Troposphere Almost all weather occurs in the Troposphere. Highest 75% of all molecules Highest Highest Altitude INCREASING Altitude DE CREASING
  1. Gravity -‐ __________________________________________________________________________________________
  2. High pressure -‐ ____________________________________________________________________________________
  3. Low pressure -‐ ____________________________________________________________________________________
  4. Ozone layer -‐ ______________________________________________________________________________________
Gravity is a force is an attractive force between two objects that is strongest at Earth’s surface and pulls air molecules toward Earth. A High Pressure system brings dense, cool air with a high amount of force, resulting in sunny skies. The Ozone Layer contains the gas ozone (O 3 ) and is at the top of the stratosphere. It protects us from ultraviolet (UV) light. A Low Pressure system brings less dense, warm air with a low amount of force, resulting in cloudy, rainy days.
