Different procedures that are used to evaluate a client's respiratory status by checking
indicators such as the oxygenation of the blood, lung functioning and the integrity of the airway
Potential diagnosis- blood pH levels can be
affected by a number of disease processes
(respiratory, renal, malnutrition, electrolyte
imbalance)
Helpful in monitoring the effectiveness of
various treatments such as acidosis iner
Verify patient allergies
Ensure that the patient has a consent form
and it was signed by the patient prior to to
the procedure
Remove the patient's dentures and partials
Maintain the patient on NPO status prior to
procedure
Fluid aspirated during a thoracentesis is
analyzed for general appearance, cell
counts, protein, and glucose content.
Provide pain medication 30 minutes prior to procedure
instruct the client to gargle with salt water or to use
throat lozenges can provide comfort for sore throat
Instruct client to immediately report persistent cough,
increased swallowing, blood tinged or purulent
sputum, difficulty breathing or chest pain
Monitor vital signs
Auscultate lungs for a decrease in or
abscense of of breath sounds
Apply dressing over the puncture site
Check for bleeding and drainage
Encourage the client to take a deep breathe
to assist with lung expansions
