Information on the Aston Medical School selection process. The first stage of the selection process for the A100 Medicine Couse at Aston University involves assessment of achieved academic qualifications and UCAT score. Applicants are ranked and invited for interview based on their position in the ranking and the number of interview slots available. Performance across academic qualifications, UCAT score and interview are then all used for the final ranking.
GCSES: the School scores 6 GCSEs with Maths, English Language, Biology and Chemistry being compulsory. The highest two grades in the remaining subjects are included to make up 6 in total. The grades are given a score: A* (9/8) = 4, A (7) =3, B (6) = 2, C (5) = 1. Predicted A levels are not scored. Achieved A Levels are scored. A* = 4, A = 3, B = 2.
Academic qualifications, either GCSEs alone or GCSEs and A Levels, account for 2/3s of the overall score used for ranking, for selection for interview.
We do not have a cut off score for the UCAT and we accept all four SJT bands (1-4). The total possible range of UCAT scores are divided into equal deciles from 3600 to 1200 with points, in 0.5 gradations awarded.
The 2018 cohort was atypical. Applications to the Medical School consisted of 49 places for International Students and a ring fenced pool of 20 places for Widening Participation UK students. These 20 places were limited to A level students on Aston University’s Sir Doug Ellis Pathway to Healthcare which recruits WP students from state schools in the area. Places were allocated on the basis of eligibility via this pathway.
