Summary/ Response Assignment
After learning how to access appropriate materials in the databases at
the library and on the Internet, complete the following steps to write a
summary of an article.
1. Locate an appropriate article (2-3 pages in length and no more than 5
years old) using an electronic database. It should be about an area of
interest related to your chosen course of study or employment.
2. Record the bibliographic information on the article. Consult the MLA
handout available in the library or use the Noodlesbib link on the
library’s website.
3. Read the article several times. What is the author trying to tell
you about the topic? This is the main idea of the article and will be
part of the thesis.
4. Highlight the main ideas in the article. Topic sentences should help
you identify the main ideas.
5. Underline the supporting details following each main idea that you will
use in your summary.
6. Use the material in numbers 4 and 5 and put them into a topical
outline format that would include a thesis appropriate for a summary.
Be sure to include the title of the article and the author’s full
name as well as the main idea of the article in your thesis for
the summary.
7. Use your own words to write an objective summary of the article.
Provide a few examples of the author’s support for his/her claims.
Write in present tense and indent as needed. Write in your own words
and use direct quotes sparingly. Do not give your opinion of the article
or its topic.
8. The summary of the essay should be more than one paragraph, about
one page in length, and include the most important ideas in the article.
9. Take note of the author and his/her credentials. As you read the
article, take note of the sources, research, and experts to which the
author refers.
10. Once you have completed the summary, write a response to the
article. Consider the following questions:
Revisit number 3 from above. Is this a worthy article for research
purposes? Why or Why not? (answers to number 9 will help you
decide)

How does the article cause me to question my own beliefs, values, and assumptions?  Do I agree with this author? Why or why not? Did the author change my view? How? Helpful Hints for writing a response:  Do not write a book report.  Do not write “I do/do not like this article because…”  Do not write a narrative about your personal experiences.  Consider the article’s main idea.
