Comparing Search Results for Educational Research: ERIC vs. Ask.com - Prof. David Granger, Assignments of Humanities

Two activities for students in the social foundations of american education course during the fall 2006 semester. The first activity involves comparing search results from the eric database and ask.com when searching for 'classroom management'. Students are asked to identify the types of results they get back and discuss the differences between the two search interfaces. The second activity requires students to find scholarly articles on educational theorists john dewey and lev vygotsky using various library databases, as well as a newspaper article on school vouchers or school budgets from their hometown newspaper. This document serves as a guide for students to complete these activities.

How would you make the search better?

  2. Next, find a scholarly journal article about the theories of Lev Vygotsky. Use ERIC to find the article. (Make sure to list the steps you took to get to ERIC in the next column ‡ )
  3. Find a newspaper article on the topic of school vouchers. Use Lexis-Nexis Academic and look for New York state newspapers. (Make sure to list the steps it takes to get to Lexis-Nexis from the library homepage ‡ )
  4. Go to http://library.uncg.edu/news/ and find your hometown newspaper (or, the closest city/town). Search their website for an article on the topic of school budgets. List : -newspaper title -URL -title of the article ALL in the second column instead of “Steps taken” ‡
