Topic: an evaluation report of a major program or event that relied almost exclusively on volunteers, based on interviews with volunteers, program or the event coordinator Recruitment incentives/ rewards and recognitions: Similar to any industry or kind of employment, volunteer management is considered based on the human resource framework. Nowadays, incentives/ rewards and recognition are considered an effective manner for volunteer retention or maintenance of volunteer commitment, particularly for the event that takes place on an annual basis that relies almost exclusively on volunteers (Aisbett and Hoye, 2015). The Falls Music and Arts Festival occurs in three days in the New Year Eve annually is considered one of the largest music and art events in Australia. Therefore, the festival is one of the events relying on large number of volunteers and the festival prefers to select people who volunteered for it previously. Normally, all volunteers for the festival will get free tickets in and shirts to wear. Normally, ticket fee for the festival varies from $100 to over $350. This fee is relatively high for students and young people who are the main audiences and participants of the festival. Volunteers have chances to go to the festival without having to pay ticket fee. As a result, free ticket is a worth reward for volunteers, particularly for young people who are less likely to have much money on these kinds of events but have huge desire to participate in (Ahn, 2018). In addition, the fact remains that music and art festivals are more likely to gather the millennials in the modern world, they are enthusiastic, and fund. Thus, volunteers will have opportunities to work in an enjoyable and fun working environment with good work experience, meeting new people to expand their relationship circle. After finishing the event, volunteers will receive their achievement certificates which are put on their resume (Jeon and Park, 2016). Moreover, the fact remains that the festival will have well – known artists that volunteers have chances to meet their idols. Volunteer integrity It is undeniable that volunteer integrity plays an important role in the event, especially when the event has much relied on volunteer force. The festival does not allow abuse or use of drugs, drinking and fighting which are seen to have tremendous impacts on the festival happening. However, it is necessary to put trusts on volunteers that
volunteers will do the right things on both mental and physical manner as well as they will arrive at their allocated and assigned shifts on a timely basis without being influenced by any substance, alcohol or drugs (Giannoulakis, Wang and Gray, 2007). It could be seen that in these kinds of event, the organizers still hire paid staff to delegate more responsibility for them whereas volunteers has less responsible than paid employees. This aims to have in-charge people to manage and supervise volunteers to ensure that if any volunteer is caught when doing the wrong things such as abusing alcohol or drugs in the festival, he or she will be kicked out of the festival and the organizer will not allow them for the volunteering activities again in the future. Methods used to recruit volunteers The main method for recruitment of volunteers is social media and the festival’s website. It is obvious that most information of the festival will be public on the website and even recruitment of volunteers (Lee and Brudney, 2012). It is creative that the festival has a pop-up window appearing when people have intention to pay for their ticket. The information of free ticket for volunteer will appear in the window to get attention of audience. In addition, Facebook and Instagram are considered effective social platforms to connect, find and recruit proper candidate for volunteering activities. On Facebook platform, there is a fanpage and group named ‘Fall Festival – Staff and Volunteer Hub’ to attract potential volunteers, update and inform the festival’s demand for volunteers on a timely basis. Each post on this fanpage is attractive with detailed information of the positions including responsibilities and benefits that volunteers could receive. Interviews and recommendations Interview No. 1. Interviewer: From your point of view, how do you think about the festival, for example its importance. Interviewee: Well, I am so exciting when the festival takes place every year. I will have time spending for my friends, enjoying music and art works, meeting my idols in real life. It’s so interesting…. Interview: Anything else?
Interviewee: Well, if I would change about my experience, I would have changed my shift and my position. I wanted to volunteer in the backstage of music performance so bad since I could have chances to meet my idols. I took a job for controlling seats. It was an interesting role but I was so busy to arrange seats for audience. Interviewer: Would you still have attended the festival if you weren’t volunteering? Interview: I am a student now. You know, the ticket in the festival is too expensive for me. The only way I can join the festival is to be a volunteer. It is free. References Aisbett, L. and Hoye, R., 2015.
