TERM 1
1
DEFINITION 1
Imagine yourself being a server for a busy res taurant like Buffalo Wild Wings or
Chilis. You have a full section and you are w orking as hard as you can to provide
your tables with excellent service. You go ov er to one of the tables and see this
(insert image here) written in the tip section . Having served in restaurants in the
past, I can personally say from experience tha t this is one of the worst feelings a
server can have while working. Being a serv er, I make $2.13 an hour, and
therefore I do not receive a paycheck every tw o weeks. Many people assume that
I do, and disregard the tip section on the cred it card receipt. I feel it is important
to let everyone know today, why servers des erve to be tipped 15 to 20%.
TERM 2
2
DEFINITION 2
There are a few things that are to be conside red before you leave the house to go
out to eat at a restaurant. As I previously stated , the hourly pay of a server is
below minimum wage, and those wages d ont even cover the amount of taxes we
have to pay on the hours that we work throu ghout the week. Think about it,
people are barely making it on $8.25 an hou r. You may think that since times are
rough you are not inclined to tip, but in the e nd you are hurting us, more than its
hurting you. We do not work for free, and w e have bills just like everyone else. It
should be kept in mind that a portion of our daily salary is often shared with other
positions in a restaurant like hostesses, buss ers, and bartenders.
TERM 3
3
DEFINITION 3
Generally, this amount is around 3-10 % depending on the
restaurant, and this is of total sales. An d it is being tipped out as
we call it in the service industry. This can be very stressful seeing
money that you worked very hard fo r leaving your hands at the
end of the night. In An Open Letter: Why You Should Always Tip
Your Servers At Least 15% on August 24, 2015, GiGi Moody writes,
For each check, the servers are ex pected to tip out or tip share 2
percent of the check to other mem bers of the restaurant. This is
whether you tip or not.
TERM 4
4
DEFINITION 4
When youre not tipping or are tipping less than 15 percent, youre
actually short changing your server. T his is very stressful for
individuals who occupy positions that a re compensated through
tips. In Illinois, if a percentage of my sa les for the week between 8
and 15 percent average minimum w age or higher, employers are
not required to compensate me. And this is regardless of what I
actually made in tips.
TERM 5
5
DEFINITION 5
So now you have a little background o n our salary. But do you
know how to tip? On Learnvest.com, on November 12, 2010.
Deborah Goldstein writes, In general, tip size should range from
15% to 20% of the bills total. If a waitpe rson covers the basics (Is
gracious, gets the food to the table, a nd is available to meet your
needs), 15% is appropriate. With the h elp of these guidelines Im
going to offer to you today, you should be better prepared for the
next time you enjoy a night out on th e town. So weve all had to
wait forever to be seated once in a w hile.

DEFINITION 3 Generally, this amount is around 3-10% depending on the restaurant, and this is of total sales. And it is being tipped out as we call it in the service industry. This can be very stressful seeing money that you worked very hard for leaving your hands at the end of the night. In An Open Letter: Why You Should Always Tip Your Servers At Least 15% on August 24, 2015, GiGi Moody writes, For each check, the servers are expected to tip out or tip share 2 percent of the check to other members of the restaurant. This is whether you tip or not. TERM 4

DEFINITION 4 When youre not tipping or are tipping less than 15 percent, youre actually short changing your server. This is very stressful for individuals who occupy positions that are compensated through tips. In Illinois, if a percentage of my sales for the week between 8 and 15 percent average minimum wage or higher, employers are not required to compensate me. And this is regardless of what I actually made in tips. TERM 5

DEFINITION 5 So now you have a little background on our salary. But do you know how to tip? On Learnvest.com, on November 12, 2010. Deborah Goldstein writes, In general, tip size should range from 15% to 20% of the bills total. If a waitperson covers the basics (Is gracious, gets the food to the table, and is available to meet your needs), 15% is appropriate. With the help of these guidelines Im going to offer to you today, you should be better prepared for the next time you enjoy a night out on the town. So weve all had to wait forever to be seated once in a while.

And I want to tell you to not take out all those frustrations of waiting on your server or bartender once you have been seated. I say this because it happens all the time, and the tip is generally reflected. Always keep in mind, that 3 to 10 percent of your total bill is being paid to the hostess that you were originally frustrated with. In addition to wait time, mess up orders can occasionally or frequently happen depending on where you visit. Say you ordered a steak medium rare and it comes out medium well. So in order to fix the kitchens mistake we must ploy and do everything possible to keep that customer happy. TERM 7

DEFINITION 7 However, many times the customer does not understand that it was not our mistake, but the kitchens. What now? Are you going to be rude and hateful all night for the rest of the evening because your order came out wrong. Or are you going to realize that it was an honest mistake by the kitchen, dont forget that fact, and still tip them accordingly. Well, youre probably thinking, what if I get down right awful service? Everyone is always fighting a battle you know nothing about. TERM 8

DEFINITION 8 Be kind. Always. Think about it, have you ever had a bad day at work? Im sure the answer to that question is yes because everybody does. Jamie Simmerman writer of Tipping Guide for Good and Bad Service from an Ex-Waitress says, Leaving a pleasant note of encouragement, or a decent tip, may be enough to turn that servers day around. You should always do unto others, as others would do unto you. TERM 9

DEFINITION 9

Satisfy the Need: The solution is simple, do not be quick to

judge your server based on the service of the kitchen or

other workers. Do not let service of others affect the tip you

give to your server.

TERM 10

DEFINITION 10 Visualization: If this situation is not fixed. Our belongings do not get paid for. In Tips are not optional, they are how waters get paid in America. Chelsea Welch says I need tips to pay my bills. All waiters do. We spend an hour or more of our time befriending you, making you laugh, getting to know you, and making your dining experience the best it can be. We work hard. We care. We deserve to be paid for that.
