OPTION 1: FINAL EXAM: ANTH 588, ARCHAEOLOGICAL METHOD AND THEORY

Part 1 Find four articles, one each that fits into the types of relevance outlined in Smith 2021. List the citation below and identify the main research question (or set of research questions/topics) that define the study. These should not be review articles. These should be archaeological cases studies. These should not be articles that we read in class. Heritage or Descendant Concerns Citation: Main Research Question: Local Practical Topics Citation: Main Research Question: Middle-Range Empirical and Conceptual Topics Citation: Main Research Question: Abstract Conceptual Topics Citation: Main Research Question: Example Middle-Range Empirical and Conceptual Topics Citation: Holland-Lulewicz, Jacob 2019 The social networks and structural variation of Mississippian sociopolitics. PNAS. Main Research Question: What is the relationship between political organization and the structure of underlying social networks? How do social networks underwrite forms of political systems? How durable are wider social networks in the face of substantive changes to political systems?

Part 2 From this list, choose two. For each of the two articles you choose, (1) identify the main research question of the article and (2) deduce the BIG research questions/themes to which the article contributes. That is, what are the “middle-range or conceptual topics” addressed by the study? These topics should be broad and should not reference the specifics of the case itself. (See Smith 2021 Tabel 1 for examples of the kinds of middle-range empirical and conceptual topics I am looking for.) (The main research question can be specific to the case study.) Part 3 Find two articles OUTSIDE of archaeology (and written by non-archaeologists) that are complementary or comparable (in their conceptual topics) to the two articles you chose in Part 2 (one for each article). BRIEFLY compare and contrast the research questions and approaches that define each study. How would you alter, change, or redesign the archaeological study to be relevant to the non-archaeological study?
