History Painting

The most prestigious kind of painting. History paintings, deriving

from the French word histoire (which means story), are paintings

that depict scenes from stories that would be previously known to

their viewers. Usually, these stories are historical, mythological, or

biblical. In most cases, history paintings are much larger than

other paintings.

TERM 32

Sublime

DEFINITION 32

The attempt to represent something that is fundamentally

unrepresentable. This is usually associated with Romanticis, where

artists have often developed techniques to represent sheer

vastness, sheer violence, or sheer terror. (For example, the

attempt to evoke the violence of a storm, as opposed to the storm

itself in Joseph Turners The Slave Ship.)

TERM 33

Vanitas

DEFINITION 33

In the arts, vanitas is a type of symbolic work of art especially

associated with still life painting in Flanders and the

Netherlands in the 16th and 17th centuries, though also

common in other places and periods.

TERM 34 DEFINITION 34

Darby and Pritchard, iron bridge, Coalbrookdale, England,

1776-1779 (iron)*
