Life in a Metro: Social Psychology Perspective
By Jay Vijay Pandit, B.Sc. CP – 4, AIBAS -AUM | A70240720023 | PSYBSCB2013
The movie, Life in a Metro consists of 9 main characters names being (with future
abbreviations in bracket) as:
Rahul (R.L): the office employee, Neha (N.H.): the office assistant, Ranjeet (R.J.): the office
boss, Shikha (S.H.): the office boss’s wife, Shruti (S.I.): the sister of Shikha, Akash (A.K.):
an aspiring actor, Monty (M.T.): Shruti’s probable partner, Vaijayanti (V.J.): Shikha’s dance
teacher, Amol (A.M.): long lost love of V.J.
The pair wise perspective analysis of all the characters is here as follows:
1. S.H. and R.J.: - They both have a 6-year-old daughter and are married to each other since 8
to 9 years. Just like an exponentially down falling curve, their love and attraction towards
each other got exhausted which was according to the Sternberg’s model of love in the
beginning of their marriage on the Consummate love stage wherein they were intimate,
committed, and enthusiastic towards each other which later started declining to a Fatuous
love.
Afterwards, R.J., when he comes to know about S.H.’s affair he questions her that did she
indulge in a sexual intercourse with him, this states absence of trust between the, that is
absence of intimacy between them.
Wherein they had only passion and commitment towards each other and their family but in
the end of the movie after knowing each other’s extra-marital affairs they decide to adapt to a
Commitment based love wherein there was empty love between them and only certain level
of commitment that too reinforced because of their daughter’s health concerns.
2. R.J. and N.H.: - They were Boss- Secretary to each other when they fell in a relationship
with each other and used to indulge in an intercourse regularly at R.H.’s apartment and one
day N.H. tries to self-harm her with phenyl as R.J. tells her that they were only together was
beneficial purposes and not any true love that N.H. might have wanted.
According to Complimentary theory, R.J. and N.H. had social needs of fulfilling excitement
and getting social recognition quickly (respectively) through which since they stayed
together, they both got rewards which they wanted for the case, R.J. got the sexual pleasure
through a young woman like N.H. while N.H. got quick promotions.
When we apply Robert Sternberg’s Model of love to N.H. and R.J.’s relationship, it can be
inferred that they were with each other only for individualistic benefits and no collective
purposes and hence commitment was going to stay absent between them and secondly, they
had little thoughts of care for each other which were due to their professional relationship of
being Secretary and Boss, that refers to Intimacy being not there in adequate levels.
Therefore, one can infer to N.H. and R.J.’s relationship as a Passion – Infatuation and Passion
type of relationship.

Life in a Metro: Social Psychology Perspective By Jay Vijay Pandit, B.Sc. The pair wise perspective analysis of all the characters is here as follows:

  1. S.H. and R.J.: - They both have a 6-year-old daughter and are married to each other since 8 to 9 years. Just like an exponentially down falling curve, their love and attraction towards each other got exhausted which was according to the Sternberg’s model of love in the beginning of their marriage on the Consummate love stage wherein they were intimate, committed, and enthusiastic towards each other which later started declining to a Fatuous love. Afterwards, R.J., when he comes to know about S.H.’s affair he questions her that did she indulge in a sexual intercourse with him, this states absence of trust between the, that is absence of intimacy between them. Wherein they had only passion and commitment towards each other and their family but in the end of the movie after knowing each other’s extra-marital affairs they decide to adapt to a Commitment based love wherein there was empty love between them and only certain level of commitment that too reinforced because of their daughter’s health concerns.
  2. R.J. and N.H.: - They were Boss- Secretary to each other when they fell in a relationship with each other and used to indulge in an intercourse regularly at R.H.’s apartment and one day N.H. tries to self-harm her with phenyl as R.J. tells her that they were only together was beneficial purposes and not any true love that N.H. might have wanted. According to Complimentary theory, R.J. and N.H. had social needs of fulfilling excitement and getting social recognition quickly (respectively) through which since they stayed together, they both got rewards which they wanted for the case, R.J. got the sexual pleasure through a young woman like N.H. while N.H. got quick promotions. When we apply Robert Sternberg’s Model of love to N.H. and R.J.’s relationship, it can be inferred that they were with each other only for individualistic benefits and no collective purposes and hence commitment was going to stay absent between them and secondly, they had little thoughts of care for each other which were due to their professional relationship of being Secretary and Boss, that refers to Intimacy being not there in adequate levels. Therefore, one can infer to N.H. and R.J.’s relationship as a Passion – Infatuation and Passion type of relationship.
  1. A.K. and S.H.: - S.H. was not aware about her husband, R.J.’s extra marital affair even when she was regularly meeting A.K., while A.K.’s wife and family had left him and he was in search of a partner and he was hopeful when he got close with S.H. through their regular Saturday meets and a movie date and when they were almost going to commit an intercourse but that time S.H. denied and cut-off all kind of attractive feelings towards A.K. as she knew that it won’t be socially profitable for her to indulge into a relationship with A.K. According to Social Exchange theory, individuals tend to do social tasks only if the cost of inputs is lesser than the outcome of those inputs. Herein, S.H.’s cost of getting into a relationship with A.K. by running away with him would be abandoning her broke husband, R.J. and her young daughter who was ill due to the family feuds already, additionally social relationships would get hampered. The reward S.H. would get would come with the guilt of the cost and hence S.H. chose not to run with A.K. and wished him good luck for his future endeavors with a stoned heart. According to Sternberg’s model of love, S.H. and A.K. do not exhibit a feeling of longing to live with each other into reality and neither turn up to live with each other when situations were in favor. They also did not indulge into any sexual intercourse with each other. The former states that there was no commitment and passion between them while only intimacy would stay as they did exhibit feelings of concerns for each other as they used to wish each other all the best for their endeavors and had trust between them. Thus, their relationship was an Intimacy i.e., Liking and Intimacy alone.
  2. R.L. and N.H.: - Their relationship was on a preparatory stage throughout the movie. It was in the last when N.H. abandons R.J. for R.L. Initially, R.L. exhibited an Unrequited Passionate love for N.H. as he only was passionate about N.H. as observed when he insisted N.H. to come for a movie with her but she went with R.J. for their sexual intercourse in R.L.’s apartment itself, which stands as the reason that N.H. and R.L. were prevented from each other’s passion in most of the movie. Thereafter, since R.L.’s feelings for N.H. were not getting reciprocated by N.H., he decides to leave all the promotions and perks he got even the apartment that he used for sexual escapades for his colleagues. At the time when he left everything which was told to N.H. by R.J., N.H. realizes how much wrong she was doing to herself and R.J. by not realizing and acknowledging their built attraction when R.L. despite knowing about N.H. and R.J.’s sexual affair helped N.H. and even tolerated S.I.’s aggression for N.H. on himself when N.H. self-harmed herself. Thus, the Unrequited Enthusiastic love between R.L. and N.H. turned into Requited Enthusiastic love afterwards as N.H. reciprocated the feeling of intense longing for union with R.L. when he decided to leave everything. According to Sternberg’s model of Love, The Relationship between N.H. and R.L. starts with an Intimacy alone from R.L.’s side which gradually turns into a Companionate Love as they developed intimacy and realization for commitment after N.H. was helped by R.L. in her worse times. Therefore, their relationship would turn into a Consummate Love if the factors like attachment styles, time with each other and longing for commitment stay affirmative in future.
