Learning Outcome Statements:

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Identify the basic sentence patterns of English.
  2. Utilize common sentence expansion of English.
  3. Identify common parts of speech by structure and function in a variety of languages.
  4. Transcribe conventional spelling into phonetic spelling.
  5. Display and explain how the sounds of English are made.
  6. Synthesize information regarding similarities and differences across languages and dialects, including gender differences.
  7. Demonstrate knowledge of the basic tenets of first and second language acquisition.
  8. Recognize cross-linguistic language influences.
  9. Recognize ethnic/race/gender issues embedded in language usage.

Standards:

The student will meet the learning outcomes at the following level, degree or measurement:

  1. Identify and correct faulty grammar usage in English sentences, applying linguistic rules.
  2. Using phrase structure rules (PSRs), produce variations on sentence structure trees(SSTs) and demonstrate an awareness of the relationship between PSRs and SSTs.
  3. Contrast grammatical functions/categories (i.e., subject, object, etc.) with parts of speech (noun, verb, etc.) and apply these constructs to sample sentences in various languages.
  4. Apply knowledge of the phonetic alphabet and phonemic distinctions to translate a given sample from conventional spelling to phonetic spelling, and vice versa.
  5. Describe the significance of phonetic rules and properties, explaining the similarities and differences of these rules and properties across specific languages and cultures.
  6. Given a list of languages and dialects, including gender differences, organize them according to linguistic typology.
  7. Apply theories of language acquisition of both first and second language to sets of linguistic data.
  8. Describe a minimum of three challenges faced by second language learners in each of the following settings: an educational setting, a workplace setting, and a social setting.
