ENCO 4363 – Alternative Energy Markets‐Transportation and Fuels Group project/Overview GROUP PAPER ASSIGNMENT: A major portion of your course grade will depend upon the quality of a group paper and presentation. The group paper will be due as of 9 AM, April 24, delivered by email in MS Word or PDF format. (The group paper constitutes 20 percent of your course grade.) The following requirements must be met:

  1. The group paper should address a significant issue related to the content of this course, namely, the comparison of emerging alternative and renewable sources of transportation fuel to the status quo of conventional, oil‐based fuels. The topic may focus on a specific alternative fuel – for example, different approaches to producing ethanol – or it may focus on a variety of fuels in the context of a specific mode of transportation – for example, biofuels for long‐distance trucking, or alternative fuels for aviation. Other approaches are possible.
  2. At a minimum, the paper must include a discussion of costs and benefits associated with the alternatives discussed, and must compare any alternatives to convention fuels in terms of their impact on local air pollution and emission of greenhouse gasses. (These required elements need not be the primary focus of the report.)
  3. The required length of the paper content depends on group size using the following formula: 500 words + (500 words x group‐size). A one‐person group must produce a 1000 word paper; a 2 ‐person group must produce a 1500 word paper, and so on. (This formula translates into about 4 pages for one person, 6 pages for two, etc.) A group may contain up to five members.
  4. The group paper grade will be penalized if the paper is more than 10 percent longer or 10 percent shorter than the required length, but no penalty for variation within those limits.
  5. The paper should include a title page and a bibliography. You may include tables, charts, or other images inline in the text or on separate pages. The title page, bibliography, chart and caption text do not count toward the required word count. GROUP PRESENTATION REQUIREMENT: Group presentations will be scheduled during the week of April 6 ‐10. Each group will have about 5 minutes per group member to present a concise summary of the group’s paper. More details about the requirements for the group presentation will be forthcoming. Generally speaking: groups should present their most important material in a clear, memorable fashion. (Another 20 points) GROUP PROJECT RELATED INDIVIDUAL TASKS:
  • Task 1: Preliminary collection of ideas. (Due Jan 23; 5 points)
  • Task 2: Summary of book or significant report related to group topic. (Due Mar 2; 10 points)
  • Task 3: Two multiple‐choice questions related to presentation content. (Due Apr 3; 5 points) More details on these assignments will be provided as the semester progresses.
